Is it really a pain in the back-side?
I'm tempted to get a 680 but I've read all kinds of nightmare stories about changing drivers, or in reality is it just a few cases?
Has anyone done this successfully?
On win7 and believe using drive sweeper is not a good idea.

No nightmares, not in my experience anyway. Just do an uninstall from the cp. Don't make driversweeper the first thing you try. You shouldn't need to use it in most situations, and imo would do better to only consider programs like that as a last resort.

Uninstall drivers, install new card, install new drivers, job done.

Hell, you can run amd and Nvidia cards at the same time in the same pc if you want to.

What I did when going from AMD to nvidia was I first uninstalled catalyst drivers using add/remove programs in Windows, which has the option to completely remove all AMD software. Doing this should be good enough.

That said, Windows also keeps copies of previous Catalyst drivers you've installed which are automatically installed when you uninstall your current Catalyst drivers (as above). You can get rid of these previous drivers by going into device manager and uninstalling the driver. When doing this you'll see an option to permanently remove the copy of this previous driver so that's it's not installed again. Depending on how many Catalyst drivers you've installed, you may have to repeat this process a couple of times, untill all previous drivers are removed from Windows. You'll know you're finished when you reboot and Windows has installed the standard VGA graphics drivers, i.e. the screen is at low res and aero is disabled. All this is not strictly necessary but I do it anyway and have not had a single issue yet.

Unless you have a specific issue, there's no reason to use third party utilities like driver cleaner, you can easily do it using the tools already available to you in Windows.
