Lo all,

My current hosting with Freezone.co.uk come to an end at the end of this month and I'm looking for a change. I'm very tempted by Vidahost's low prices and good reviews in here. However, I've never changed hosts before so I'm not really sure what I'm doing.

Do I need to contact Freezone to tell them I'm changing or will Vida do that kind of thing for me?

Cheers

I'm pretty sure you don't need to inform your current hosts.

If it's just files and image movements then simple FTP transfer will suffice. More complex things (databases) and the like need more delicate operation

As far as I remember, Vida provide a hassle-free transfer programme http://www.vidahost.com/transfer.php. If you're not sure about something then fill out the form. They're friendly people.

edit: you will need to swing over the Domain names too

Ideal thanks for the quick reply blade,

I've just been reading there site and it all seems fairly easy. I've not got anything too complicated to copy across.

Cheers

If the transfer thing above doesnt work, a quick guide:

1) take a copy of all your files, databases, emails (if you use webmail)
2) login to your domain registrar, you'll need to change the name servers from freezone to vidahost ... they will be something along the lines of ns1.vidahost.com / ns2.vidahost.com
3) you then need to allow up to 48 hrs for the DNS to change and update across most ISPs, however this is usually within a few hours
4) Once it's migrated and your account setup on vidahost, it's time to reupload them files/databases and setup your email accounts

Thanks for the extra info.

I've just contacted Freezone to get an EPP code and they are asking for £30 to transfer the domain! Surely they are taking the proverbial? My subscription with them ends on the 31st for crying out loud.

Is it a case of just waiting until the 1st of November and then buying from Vidahost from scratch?

Cheers again

I hate hosts that charge a ransom to get a code - they can get an EPP code for absolutely nothing, depending where they get their domains from (and remember, never get your domain from the place you host!) its a click of a URL and the code is sent to you!

They are taking the urine - is the charge in their terms etc you signed up to?

As for moving hosts - if your current host and your future host use cPanel, then they should be able to do a server to server move that will be easy as pie :)

Thanks for the info malef!c.

The more I do at the moment the less impressed I am with Freezone.co.uk
I checked my bank balance today and I've been charged £50 for the renewal of my hosting with them. It seems I was signed up to auto-renew and so they have just debited my account.

So much for me changing now!

I think I'm just going to have to live with it as there was obviously some tick-box I missed when I first signed up - it's probably all covered by their Ts&Cs so I doubt I have much of a leg to stand-on.

Might be worth a phonecall...

Ask for a refund - if they dont give it back do a chargeback ;)
What domain name is it if you don't mind me asking?

If its an eNom registered domain you can access your domain details yourself at http://access.enom.com. The only down side is you will need your host to set a password for you to access it.

Still say that hosts that charge you to move the domain suck but saying that was it a free domain or did you actually buy it, if you bought it is it registered in your name or your hosts?

It's defo worth a phonecall and a check of the T&C's.

Just noticed in their site that they have a 30 day money back guarentee thingy going on - E.g. if you aint happy you can get your koney back. As they renewed your account, you may be able to use this fact somehow.

If you do manage to 'escape', I can 100% vouch for tsohost. Have been with them for a good 2 years and have no complaints. They always answered my support emails within a day and have cpanel, to make setting stuff up easy.

Just a quick update guys,

I e-mailed them RE: a refund and they say that according to their Ts&Cs the auto-renewal is managed by the user and as such they are not accountable and they won't give me a refund.

I'm less than happy with this - anyone got any ideas what I can do in this situation? I made the mistake of purchasing this with a debit card rather than a credit card - will this make a chargeback impossible or can it still be done?

Cheers

Thought you lot might like an update - After a couple of phone-calls I settled for them pricematching Vidahost.

The poor guy on the other end of the phone got a bit of a talking to - not rude or aggressive but forceful enough to get the point across.

It seems that their opt-in for the auto renewal is actually an opt-out despite what they might say and I think this was what won the argument. It seems that when you sign-up you have to untick a box to say that you don't want the service, rather than the other way around.

Rest assured I will be finding another host in a years time - safe in the knowledge that I am not on any auto-renewal lists.
