Right, basically my 02 contract expires next month, the number I'm using i've had for 7 years so I want to keep it.

Today I popped into the Link and got a new contract (200 minutes, 100 txts, 18 months and a w850i for free £25). I got a seperate contract as the phone would have costed £180 roughly to upgrade on my existing one.

Now, the guy in the shop told me I wouldn't be able to change over the number, I know I can't do it atm but surely I can when the old contract expires or is it wishful thinking?

Any insight?

You need to ring up your existing providor and ask for a Pac code, this will allow you to swap your number when you give it to your new providor.

if they are anything like orange it makes life a a lot easier just phone them and say i want this number transfering to that contract theyl prob ask for your sim number and maybe imie code and your away 24hours later at the most it should be done

So the guy in the Link was talking rubbish then? He said something about only being able to change the number in the first 14 days? Bearing in mind I have another money and 4-5 days to go on my old contract?

...Just signed an O2 contract today and its 28 days to get my number ported over from Orange. Whether being on O2 already complicates this I don't know.

Right mate the way I understand it I dont think its possible as its not possible to move from o2 contract to another o2 contract and keep your number, there is however a way to do it, get a PAC code from your old contract, move that number to a Pay As You Go sim(not o2) and get another PAC code and move over to your new contract.

Looking at the O2 Help pages "Keeping mobile number" it looks like you can move numbers around within O2 :

Transferring my mobile number between O2 Service Providers
Transferring between different O2 Service Providers

If you are an existing O2 customer, wishing to move to a different Service Provider within O2, then contact your customer service team to request a Port Authorisation Code (PAC).

Once you have this please contact us and remember to provide us with the following information so we can ensure we deal with your transfer efficiently:

• The number you wish to keep
• New O2 mobile number
• New O2 SIM card number
• The PAC

Did this last week from Voda to T-mobile. One call and 5 days wait and it was done. Bought a Gold number of the bay for £8.

28 days for a number port? That's outrageous.. theres no way it should take that long, surely.
