I'm just ordering the parts for my new machine, i already have XP and XP Pro and thought of going to windows 7 in a few weeks......but to get this machine up and running i thought i would load xp.
Would it be an easy job to just replace XP with Windows 7 in a few weeks, or would i have to reload all the programmes back onto the system drive from scratch?

It's always better to start from scratch with Operating Systems, at least in my opinion. I didn't try the W7 upgrade however so not sure how good it is. I'd expect some problems upgrading in place though, especially if you go to 64 bit W7 from 32 bit XP.

I, too would start W7 from scratch, If I understand, you will be using a new XP install to get up and running with programs, then upgrading the OS later when you buy it. I have heard that the upgrade is relatively painless, as far as windows itself, some programs may later have issues with firewalls, windows defender (which I disable) and it is simpler to start with a new build. I have tried dual booting, windows XP though has a habit of removing system restore settings from W7 unless prevented.

Start from fresh, but make sure you backed up any documents you need from your old installation (Browser bookmarks, program settings, MSN logs etc) :)

Install XP for now, but when it comes to installing 7 just do it within windows.
Win7 setup puts the entire contents of the HDD into a folder which you can go into and take out what you want to save after the instalation.
So in effect, you would have installed from a fresh, but still managed to save your files at the same time.

Stick with XP (not strictly speaking sensible, or informed advice). Failing that, I'll also echo install windows 7 from scratch.

Go from scratch but what I do is to partition the HDD in windows (if you only have one HDD available) this makes the one HDD into two HDDs in laymans terms. You can then copy over any files you want to keep to this second partition, you can also download any drivers you may need and keep them their too.

Insert the windows disc and let it format the first partition wiping the old OS, once you can boot to Windows 7 the second partition will be available to copy your files back and access the latest drivers you downloaded.

Good luck with the upgrade, hope this helps

didn't notice it was you vikki, happy to see you managed to settle on parts for the new rig. Good luck with the build, hope we helped with the decision making and didn't make it too difficult ;p

Hi
Going down to Overclockers to fetch the parts this week, spec is the same as suggested only going for Corsair memory, the guys at Overclockers said that would be a good match. I notice some of the Gigabyte Bundles use the same memory. Going to buy one of the Corsair 650W psu's on offer in case my Q Tec one blows everything up! Going to use my old case for the time being and add a couple of case fans, once i get it working i'll add some more memory and no doubt a quieter cooler from the stock one, unless the Zalman one in my P4 machine will fit.
Fingers crossed...its that first press of the power button that worries me!

Yeah i noticed they use it too in their overclocked bundles, part of the reason i suggested the XMS stuff. Good call on the PSU but it may be worth getting a heatsink now as a P4 cooler even if it does fit was never designed to cool four cores and it's asking for trouble.

Good luck with the build, you know where we are if you hit any problems
