Hi guys, I have decided to leave BT Infinity even though the download speeds are so high. It seems they have blocked a number of sites that I use ( not torrents ) and when I questioned them about it they refused to say that wasn't the case. So was wondering which other Fibre providers where decent, and does anyone know of any good deals at the moment with Fibre. Cheers.

If you're looking for good deals you're probably looking at mass market ISPs and I suspect those will be blocking similar sites to BT. Have you thought about using a VPN for your traffic(to avoid blocks) combined with a cheap mass market ISP?

I shouldn't have to use a VPN to get around sites like the ones they have blocked mate. Sky Unlimited Fibre is about the same price, so might go with them. I understand them blocking torrents, I never touch them anyway, but no excuse for blocking forum sites. Will ask for MAC code in the morning.

Are you sure the websites are blocked? And are you sure the next ISP you move to has not blocked them as well?

You might be surprised but most (if not all) ISPs are all for an open 'internet' so to speak.

They only block websites under a court order request, which usually applies to all ISPs anyway.

The sites are blocked yes, all my friends have the same problem. I got hold of a VPN and they work with that on.The sites where blocked on the same day for everyone I know that uses BT. The same sites are not blocked on Sky, plusnet, talktalk or EE. Not sure about the others.

is there any BT security setting in the router you can turn off/disable?

or phone them up and ask them not to censor your traffic?

Sky have their "Sky Shield" that will block certain sites when turned on.

That is different from the "Court ordered" sites they have to block.

I'm sure BT have something similar no?

The sites they are blocking are working on the other providers, I can't post the links here for obvious reasons but they are forums of sort. I spoke to them today and they are looking into it and can't argue with the fact the same ones are blocked to so many BT customers. I explained they are working with a VPN and they admit there must be something on there end but still say they don't block sites. I am putting off getting a MAC code for a few days, interested to see what they come back with as an answer. Will post when they do lads.

We have Zen internet at work and some typical websites that would normally be blocked are untouched. Not saying that this is the case with everything, but it's a point in the right direction I suppose.

Ok guys 2 days ago I complained to ISPA about BT because they seemed to think I was under contract until July 2015 which was wrong. What happened was in January 2014 I phoned up and added the sports package and he recontracted me but I phoned back the next day and changed my mind. They said that's fine and the contract was void. Now when I called BT the other day they argued the toss with me and wouldn't listen and the guy I spoke to actually said the contract still stands even though I cancelled and so I told him where to go as you can imagine. That day I complained to ISPA.
Anyway long story short, the BT chairman has just called me and apologized for the confusion and said I am right and not under contract at all, but I asked him about BT blocking these sites. He agreed that the sites where being blocked and they had been handpicked for that reason. I said to him that BT blocking sites isn't on unless it's torrent sites or the like and he is looking into the sites blocked and again is going to get back to me. If they unblock the sites it might change my view of leaving but I am not holding my breath. But at least he admits that certain sites have been handpicked.

He said he was the chairman of BT mate. They don't like complaints and probably knew if they hadn't done anything within 5 days I would have complained to the ombudsman. I have used ISPA a number of times in the past, got me out of contracts with AOL, 02 and Bethere. I don't know if that was him or not but that is what he said.

I can guarantee it wasn't the chairman or indeed anyone from the chairman's office. It may have been someone from ELC however.

As for removing the blocks I can save you your time. They won't be amended and they most definitely weren't "handpicked". They were the result of court order brought about by the BPI and Sky, Virgin, TalkTalk and EE are also affected.

I will see what he gets back to me with but defo said he was the chairman mate. Why would he say they where handpicked if they weren't? if the blocks are still there I will just leave.
