Changing shocks in pairs?

Hi, just after a bit of help. The CTR's been in the garage for repairs now for 2 weeks following this. I went along yesterday to see how its getting on and they said it'll hopefully be finished today, they also gave me the estimate list saying whats all being replaced. Now whats concerend me a little is when I got back home and went through the list it mentions that the front passenger shock is being replaced, expected as this was the side with the damage, however there's no mention of the doing anything to the drivers side suspension. Now I've always been under the impression that shocks must be changed in pairs to keep the suspension balanced.

Am I right in thinking this? If so is there any articals out there backing this up? Also again if this is the case do I need to speak to the repairers or my insurance company direct?

Many thanks

it depends on the age of the shocks i guess. If they are newish i would replace one but if they are old or have a lot of miles then both is the best way otherwise one will be weaker than the other and you'll have to replace that one eventually too.

Well the car's on an 04 plate and covered just over 55k. I just want the car back with balanced matched suspension like it had before the ding, and I cant see how this will be the case with new suspension on on side and 5 year old parts on the other.

no.

Definitely change both. I'm changing one of mine only but it's 9 months old and done only 5k.

55k would be half way through a shocks life (at least)

My thoughts exactly. Been onto my insurance and they say it's up to the garage and they don't get involved. Waiting to hear back from garage now.

Well just heard from the garage and the examiner is not back in till monday morning now so he's going to call me then.

To be fair to the garage, the insurers would instruct them to replace only what's broken, to keep the cost down. They should quote the repairs including changing both, but who knows.

Honda only did one of mine under warranty on my 2003 car 2 years ago. Seems OK to me although personally I'd do both if I was paying.
