changing your computers ip address

So you're trying to share a 3G connection on one PC with others on your home network?

A solid description of your hardware and what you're trying to do would help.

hi guys thanks for reading through. the internet sharing is not so much of an issue as i think it will work ok once the network is working - i dont think the 3G router would help as i dont use a dongle i have to have my mobile plugged in to the pc.

the main issue is just file sharing across the network. hardware is as follows

asus p5q pro - vista ultimate
2 x dell optiplex gx 260 - xp
dell optiplex gx 270 - xp media centre edition

they are all running standard network cards

2 x d-link des-1008d's

ive tryed resetting the winsock on the vista machine which hasnt done anything and im still getting error code 1231 from the vista machine, although i can ping from the other pcs back to the vista machine

this is stressing me out so much lol

cheers!

Internet sharing won't just work as soon as you get the network setup. To do that you need Internet Connection Sharing or something similar, which is frankly an arse. File sharing is fine though.

To start off with you'll need to create a network. Without a router or something else dishing out DHCP you need to configure IP addresses manually. This is all IPv4, ignore IPv6 it's irrelevant.

Assuming you might end up trying ICS, set the machine you normally connect the phone to with the same settings ICS would give it, so an IP of 192.168.0.1, subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 and leave the gateway blank. Give the remaining machines IP addresses in the same range, for example 192.168.0.2, 192.168.0.3 and 192.168.0.4, all with the subnet mask as 255.255.255.0 and 192.168.0.1 as the gateway.

Next step would be configuring file sharing. How you go about this and how you use it varies between XP and Vista. There's no easy step-by-step but things that might be needed or might make it easier include:
  • Putting all the machines in the same workgroup
  • Configuring each machine with the same user account and password, or disabling Password Protected File Sharing
  • Enabling file and printer sharing
  • Allowing file and printer sharing in Windows Firewall
  • Enabling Network Discovery

thats a lot for your input mate. im going to follow what youve said and assign ip's manually so leave the gateway blank on the machine which i connect the phone to which is the vista one? the machines on xp are set to the same workgroup but i cant for the life of me find anywhere in vista to set it to the same?

also have you any idea why i cant set the network to private on the vista machine or should that not really be an issue>?

many thanks again for your time

Vista's Control Panel Home view and Network and Sharing Centre might confuse it a bit, but it's effectively in the same place, the Computer Name tab of the System Properties control panel.

Disable the 3G connection and try it. You'll probably find it works when the 3G connection is enabled and online, but not when it's enabled and offline, because Vista can't establish the type of network it's connected to when a connection is offline. Dunno if there's a better way around it.

right... thanks to daegan ive managed to put the vista machine on the same workgroup as the others and i can access things across the network etc :)

im having one other issue, i have shared a few folders on the vista machine which are visible on others but the only folder i can get access to is the public one. ive had a look through the sharing menu for the folders i want to give access to and there is just my name up the top so it looks like its only me that can access them? im not sure how to change to public or whatever so anyone can have access like they can the public folder?

thanks all :)

Probably something to do with Password Protected Sharing / not using the same user account credentials on each machine.

right ive managed to set it to everyone and administrators - checking against the public folder absolutely everything is the same but i still can only get into the public folder from the other pc's :(

Password Protected Sharing is on by default in Vista. It means the other machines must have a matching user account and password to be able to connect. If you don't want to replicate user accounts and passwords on each machine turn it off.

in the sharing and discovery section of vista password protected sharing is turned off mate, its the only thing ive turned off out of the list?
