Quick, to the forums for help!

I attempted to withdraw money from an ATM using my Halifax Clarity Credit card at my hotel in Cancun, Mexico, whilst on holiday. It did not work. The ATM gave me a 'failed' message, I dont rememebr the exact words.

Thinking it was my card playing up we attempted my fathers Halifax Clarity which worked fine.

This was at the end of November 2021. On my Dec card statement i've been charged the $600! (Yes I know, I should have checked this before. I feel stupid. Please no not lecture me on this :( )

I am calling Halifax now. What else can I do, if anything? Are they likely to recover my money. I cant really prove it either way.

The bank will sort it.

I really do hope so. I am usually very careful and all over this kind of stuff. Had a tough personal 3 months with work and home life and feel very silly that it has taken me this long to realise that this $600 has been taken out of my account.

But I really cant see how they will sort it.

No point stressing about it, you have done all you can.
I'd work on the basis the moneys gone, so forget about it and move on, if it does get refunded by the bank then bonus.
not much else you can do

Normal process is that a difference is registered.
ATM system says balance should be x but its y physically

Your relying on 2 things, firstly that the person(s) who balanced the machine didnt pocket the difference, very unlikely or highly likely depending on where
and 2, that after this time lapse the difference hasnt been written off already and "case closed" being attributed by the ATM owner

I suspect the actual owner of the ATM trusted bank vs small company will be key in this

Similar thing happened to me but in Spain and with Barclays.

spoke to someone at bank and they sent me a claim form, money returned within a few weeks.

It happened to me (Europe not Mexico) to the value of €250 (Euros). I called my bank (Santander) and it was refunded within a week.

An ATM btw is an Americanism for what we've always call a cashpoint over here.

No idea what the Mexicans call it though!

Which hotel was it? I assume it was an ATM in the lobby and not a proper bank which was part of the hotel complex?

A lot of them call it an ATM too, depending on what part of the country you’re in.

Same happened to me, the ATM BSOD  Rebooted, took my card and money.

Was sorted in a few weeks and refunded.

But lesson to be learned for everyone. Always check your bank statements or at least have transaction alerts enabled.

In the UK we call th ATM as well. Certainly the CVIT companies do (the companies that do replenishments, like Loomis, g4s, brinks etc).

It's quite a commonly used word in the industry.

Did you ask for a receipt? Some ATMs give you receipts for the transaction even if failed.
