I love the riding there and great food but the way the roads cut up the town is not that charming. Has some fantastic off piste. I prefer staying in Chamonix (which is not exactly charming but is a lot of fun) and riding Courmayeur whenever I want.
Sow mobiling is not common anywhere in the alps and is not allowed in most places, e.g. It is I.legal in Switzerland except for transportation purposes to a homestead that you own.
Though I believe its the somewhat muted experience of following an instructor around on a prepared circuit. Still fun if you have never done it before and I think they even do a night one to a rustic hut for dinner. Its certainly not sledding around the backcountry with a guide finding fun places to go.
I don't know for certain, but what I'd heard from people is that the rules on snowmobiling in the Alps is largely due to protecting wildlife. Ptarmigans in particular they are trying to protect in the national park areas.
Regardless though, Tignes does not fit the charming aspect!
So did Meribel a few years ago, however it's not quite the same as doing 90km at 50+mph at some times, zooming through deserted woods and over lakes.
Same with the snow shoeing, the ones I have seen at ski resorts have usually been ones that don't go into what appears to be wilderness, just along the edges of pistes. I shall have to look in more detail at the Swiss ones however as they may be more interesting. The problem with Switzerland is going to be cost, but then most of the resorts suggested seem to be the expensive ones unfortunately. If only the US/Canada wasn't so far away!
have just what you are looking for. but the commute is a bear.
Alta/Snowbird/Park City/Deer valley/Solitude/Brighton/The Canyons all within an hours drive..
I've never done skiiing but wouldn't mind trying. Can you just hire the stuff when you get to these places or does everyone buy their own (horrendously expensive) kit?
