That lightning is just unbelievable, Samsung memory and a beast cooler with great tweaking and overclocking options like separate voltage for memory and an alternative bios with much higher clocking limits.

Personally, I would go 970 over 290X Lightning because...
290X is very power hungry, it will help keep the room warm ;)
290X (AMD in general) does not perform that well in the main game I play (I play very few these days)
290X does not list DX12, 970 does

Out of those two cards, the Lightning is the better quality, better value card.

It's a premium 290x vs a budget 970. To get a 970 of equivalent quality, you're looking at an additional fifty notes.

I'm going to wait until tomorrow to see what the last christmas deal is, if it isn't anything interesting then I'm getting the 290x.

Going to have to drill/saw the lower drive cages out of my Zalman Z9 case until I get a new one just to fit it in. -.-

They arnt really reasons which help the OP lol. Only thing you can argue is its power hungry but so can the 970 if you overclock it, however the listed 970 will struggle to get a decent overclock on it anyways.

The lightning is built to have its nuts overclocked off it so yea it will draw more powerin the end but we aint botherd about power tbh and this card does a good job at staying cool.

Also OP probably dosn't play "your" game so dosnt help and the 290x are just as DX12 compatible than the 900 series cards.

Hey guys. Not to high jack too much and apologies to the OP. I'm deciding between these two cards. The thing putting me off the Lightning is the. PSU requirements. I have a seasonic 650w I heard someone say they were only drawing 300watts for their whole system with a lightning in. So will I be ok?

Should be no problem.

Thread officially hijacked ;)

I hope that you'll be fine as I only have a 550w PSU hahah. Praying that it'll be just fine. (It has powered a ref 290 for over a year)
