cheap 290x or 970?

Another jacker :-)

So, how hot do these 290x's actually get, say compared to a 6950 froze for example ?

I'm looking to purchase a card over the coming weeks. I had my mind set on a 970, maybe the Galax black ed. I have a 650w PSU and the PC unit lives in a largish cupboard under the stairs, which can get warmish.

I've been ering on a 970 due to the psu and temps but the rating of the 290x here is making me think otherwise for performance. Looks, noise etc don't matter, its all about performance and temps.

With a good cooler they don't 'run' hot but the amount of heat being expelled into your room will be high. Come summer time it can become quite uncomfortable. And that's coming from somebody who loves heat :D

At stock my Lightning runs in the low 60s.
Oc'd it just about hits 70C.

Cheers fogo, those stock temps aren't a million miles off the 970 from the owners thread I've been perusing. Are your temps from benching or a few hours gaming?

I wonder why these cards get a bad rep for temps.....?

The running temperature of the card doesn't really mean anything. It just means that the cooler is good and working efficiently. But the heat it is removing from the GPU goes somewhere and that somewhere is in your case and then eventually into your room.

If you compare the heat of your room after a couple of hours gaming with both a 970 and 290(X) then from my experience your room will be noticeably warmer with the latter. I haven't used a 970 but they're cooler than 780s (which I have used) and can say that the difference was quite substantial in summer time.

That said I would still get a 290X Lightning over a 970 now as heat isn't a massive consideration for me personally but as you said it was for you...

Gaming. BF4 for around 45 minutes at 1440p

Cheers bud, good to get that insight. I've never had a heat issue in terms of shut-downs etc, but that under stairs cupboard does get warm after a few hours gaming with an oc'd 955 and 6950 twin frozr. (It dries my fishing and rugby gear well though :-) )

My concern is if it does get unmanegable...... and this is probably the Usual upgrade paranoia...... Some Degrees, some hurtz, some frame rates etc..... But will then up having to change cooling/PSU/end up watercooling etc .

The GTX is a clear winner when it comes to noise and heat, and performance-wise the two cards go back and forth with the MSI having a lead on lower resolutions (1080p or lower). That's just comparing the lighting to the MSI 970, there are other 970s out there that I'm sure can get better results

No one cares about noise and heat. We're talking about pure performance

Well my 290 used to heat my medium sized office up quite nicely lol so I'd imagine that a smaller room will become quite close after gaming for a while. You can reduce the heat by playing with vsync on though.
