Cheap 4k Media Player 2023?

Hello All,

A friend is looking for a cheap media player for his aging TV, I've got Nvidia Shields but he doesn't want to spend that much, any recommendations for a cheap player in 2023? He doesn't have surround sound and it will only play .mkv files from a USB hard drive (some 4k .265 with ATMOS, so the ability to play these in stereo would be useful) and apps would be useful but not essential.

Any suggestions?

An Amazon Fire Stick 4k Max with Kodi sideloaded would surely fulfil this criteria quite easily?

I ended up going with a FireStick 4k Max when I couldn’t stomach the price of another Apple TV. To be honest it’s been great but it’s had the odd x265 playback issue in Plex.
