CHEAP 4x4- ready for a laugh

I looked at reviews of the pathfinder and they arent good.. of course I could have looked at the wrong reviews lol
Not sure you're going to get "good" for £3k these days. Jeep Cherokee seems like a good shout.

I think it's fairly risky to take an old, cheap 4X4 to those places in the depths of winter without a lot of prep work in terms of maintenance, not just tyres.

Personally I think they are pretty decent (R51), but we only got the 2.5 diesel in the UK :( the V9X 3.0L and 4L petrol engines are much better.

The problem is as I've noted previously any cheaper one almost certainly has a rotted out chassis on its last legs, and highly likely with any of the rest also, so only worth buying if you know 110% the previous owner(s) have looked after it and done proper treatment to preserve the chassis. (EDIT: There are a few basic things which need sorting on the 2.5 as well like the chain if you want reliable operation especially past about 60K miles if they've not been done - which is probably going to blow the budget anyhow).

The X-Trail sadly is basically just a regular car jacked up and extended a bit and not really any better off-road or any more durable than any other mass produced car, the older model VW Touareg is better in every way at the same thing and stands up better off-road where it is quite competent.

My father in law bought a Kia Sorrento for about £1,000 5 or so years ago, and it's been decent enough for low usage. Mostly, my wife uses it for towing horses about.

Good luck finding anything that cheap now, which doesn't need at least another 1000 spending on it :(

I'm finding once you get under about £4000ish you find bad rust or worn out suspension. AC not working, etc.
