can anyone recommend a cheap access point. I don't need it to extend a network , its easier if its got 1 LAN I can plug into a network switch and then a separate wireless accespoint for the upstairs of my house, pass through mains isn't necessary

the only one I can see on ocuk is this one

My basket at Overclockers UK:

Total: £25.43
(includes shipping: £3.48)

You can re-task almost any wireless router to work as an access point. Many even have a dedicated option in the setup options.

If you've got an old router spare you could use that.

Aye, that's what I did, it was cheaper to get a basic router with the wireless type I wanted than to get a dedicated access point (I suspect because a lot more routers are made/sold than access points), and it also meant that I was still able to use wired devices on that cable run when needed :)

IIRC when I bought the router for our garage it was something like £25 for a Belkin (it's done well) router that did the job, or £50+ for a dedicated access point.

One of the joys of using routers is that they tend to go out of production and be replaced with a new (slightly better) model fairly frequently so you can pick them up in clearance offers much more easily than access points.
