I recently got a free pc from work. Just a pentium 4 with a gig of RAM. Its currently running Linux Mint great, although is unable to do any dvd playback. Im looking for a dirt cheap AGP card that gives me dvd playback (ideally HD playback) and works well with Linux.

I've been looking for such a card, but struggling and was hoping to get a few recomendations.

Thanks in Advance.

As far as I'm aware HD/Blu-ray isn't supported or legal on Linux, gotta love people who make these laws. Just thought I'd throw that in because I really have no clue if there are any Linux packages to playback HD content. There wasn't when I last checked and that stopped be getting a Blu-ray drive.

As for Mint, is there not a forum where you could probably get better feedback on supported hardware?

AGP cards are very, very rare nowadays. Most of them are too old to handle HD content well, and most won't have HDCP required, not that this is an issue as linux will not allow blu ray as already mentioned.

Second hand, you could get your hands on allsorts that could work for you, depends on your budget. Almost any card of the last 5 years (within reason) will do DVD playback nicely with no issues.

Your definition of dirt cheap needs to be more specific too. Is that £2 or £20?

I'd have a look on auction sites and some reviews, and also check out ubuntu forums and similar for something that will definitely work.

Firstly, many thanks for your replies.

I had thought that HD would have been too much to ask for. As for budget I was hoping to get something round the £20-35 mark. I have had some trouble playing movies and had thought it was that the onboard graphics that did not surfice, that and XBMC seemed to be struggling.

After some research I am considering getting a GeForce 6200.

Thanks for the recommendation, yeah I had seen that one thrown about, although I do feel its more than I need. I intend to do no gaming on the box.
