Cheap alternative to NAS

My router doesn't have a USB port so that's not an option, but plugging a USB drive into the Revo seems so obvious now, I don't know how I didn't think of it before, I already have a portable USB drive that I have most of my films on that I used to plug into my freeview+ box when I wanted to watch a film!

How would I go about sharing a USB drive plugged into the Revo over the network? It's running XBMC, I tried plugging it in and XBMC recognizes it and will play films but I'd like to access it from my PC so I can copy files to it directly, instead of having to plug it into my PC every time.

Seems quite high - from some rough maths my QNAP 412 with 3 drives at the current prices is under £36 a year to run.

I don't know where I got my info from, but I remember that a device running at 35 watts for 24/7 costs £50 a year to run. If you then double that because of the "green tax" that nobody seems to be aware of and has been added in since last April. That would make it £100 a year to run.
