well guys at the moment my computer is stuck on a 3400+ on socket 754, this chip is nice and cool, but id like to upgrade the rig, becuse the ram im running at the moment is pc2700! and i dont really want to put any more money into such an old and redundant rig.

so for the cheap i want to go AM2, conroe would be nice but there is no way i can afford it. my budget is £200, (can strech to £240 MAYBE, really rather not)

i came up with these

Piccie

then at a later date i would get a 2nd gig of ram, a zalman cooler for the cpu, and then along time after that do my graphics upgrade :)

if performance where equal i would happly use any other motherboard or cpu, dont think you can get a better deal on the ram tbh.

id rather stick with Asus for my motherboard as they are rock solid.

as for overclocking its really not an essential feture for the motherboard.

basicly this system has to be rock solid, as fast as possible for games and general use for only £200

i dont think i can get a much better rig but maybe one of you lot will prove me wrong!

right i need a shower lol

cheers

if I were you, I'd save my money for a bit longer. You wont notice much of an improvement upgrading from an 3400+ to a64 3800. Waitf for a little while longer until you can get an X2 or better

I have to agree, a 754 3400+ is so close to an AM2 3800+ it'd be £200 for nothing. Why is your RAM running at 333 anyway? You sure the mobo didn't just default to that (or do you mean the RAM *IS* PC2700?)? I've had no problem with 1GB (2 x 512MB) and 2GB (2 x 1GB) on 754.

lol yeah, my ram *is* a one gig stick of pc2700 cheapey ram lol.

hmm in that case i might save up the little bit more and go conroe, the only thing that puts me off is the motherboards are very expensive. what would be the best mobo to get, althought i would rather be with asus i hear the asrock ones are actualy really good, which tbh i find it hard to belive becuase they cant even present a nice website, but i will stick with an open mind for now.

if i was to get the conroe i would want to overclock it, which i hear i could take it quite far on air cooling alone (Wtih one of the big zalmans or something)

anyway

any advice much appriciated

cheers

well theres no reason not to go down this upgrade route as am2 is futureproof and if you get say the x2 3800 games will perform bout the same as your 3400, so id upgrade to what you sed, then youll pretty much have what i have, and its a cheap system thats quite high performance, all my games dont challenge my system, then when amd bring out their 65nm processors you can grab one of those n have a super fast system.

on the other hand you can wait a bit longer and get conroe but then your stuck with intel if amd bring out a cracker 65nm. its up too you but personally id upgrade now, for £200 your creating a pc that youll have for a long time due to the future amd upgrade possibilities.

Cool, thats kinda what i wanted to hear, its just amd kinda have a reputation of a new processor - a new slot lol dont want to get caught out!

this upgrade wont be until just after christmas i imagine but i think im going to go ahead, but i might get the cheapiest amd dual core am2, not sure yet. will have to see how my finances are

well if its not untill after christmas id re-asses your situation then cos as you know new stuff out all the time :D

hehe indeed. when making this post i was thinking a month, maybe two, but then i realised i need to buy some other stuff first, eg a new monitor and psu and stuff.

thanks for advice any how
