Well one of the guys at work just had his brand new 06 plate mondeo trashed by some hooligans. Apparently they ran straight up and jumped up and down on it causing massive denting  Ive decided to buy a cheap car for under £400 which has good fuel economy is fairly reliable and has a small engine and very low on insurance just to get me to work and back. Does anyone have any suggestions on what to go for?

for £400 you can't be too fussy, i would look at condition and MOT rather than a specific model. For a small engine an Escort maybe? not great cars but loads in scrappys for parts and i think £400 may just get you Zetec engine?

A bloke I work with has just manged to get a K-reg Mk1 Mondeo Estate TD, in that weird blue colour, with 8 months MOT for just £200. OK, it has about 4 million miles, but it runs well, isn't falling to pieces and gets him to work and back. Bargain.

My point is there are lots of great runners about for that money.

Yeah thats what I was after. Just something cheep and cheerfull hehe :D. What do you think to ford sierras I know someone who is selling one with a years MOT for £250.

cavaliers are good cheap, was offered a 2.0 auto with 11months mot for £125!!

Volvo 740, got offered a 2.3 saloon for £100 with 3 months mot, interior and body work were tatty but it was mechanically perfect.

rover 200/400 TD. peugeot engines, so epic mileages possible, and easily picked up for the value of the tax on them. just make sure to have a good check of the steel cooling pipe running near the drivers arch
