Cheap DDR?

My S939 system is OK, but I'm finding 1GB (2x512) is a bit of a limit. I want to get another 2GB (2x1GB) to fill the other two slots. The problem is that I obviously need DDR and no-name stuff is still £70, more or less double the price of good DDR2.

Any chance of fairly cheap DDR without importing it from the USA? It's ~£35 for 2x1GB that way, but I'm not keen on the idea.
 
The only cheap DDR is the high-density crap that a certain auction site is full of. And it's cheap for a reason.

I would spend the extra on some decent Crucial, Corsair, Kingston or Geil.
 
couldnt agree more cob, for the price difference your just so much better off getting some decent branded memory and dont mix sizes as thats asking for trouble and defo dont mix brands.
 
So would I, if I had it spare. I don't.

But I don't fancy taking a chance on something from the USA that might work and would cost me about 1/4 of the purchase price in postage to send it back, if the shop would take it back.

I'm grumpy because the price of DDR is more than double the price of DDR2. I know they make less of it, but it still seems like a con.
 
I really wouldn't chance the cheap stuff. There's a very good chance that it won't work in your 939 board (esp if it's nForce 4).

I'm mixing brands already. I'm fairly sure there's 512 of Crucial and 512 of Adata (or Vdata, or something) in this PC at the moment, without any problems. I've mixed all sorts of brands over the years without any trouble. It isn't completely stable with 1T, but that isn't unsual.

I don't want to spend much on an upgrade to 3 or 4GB of memory I'm not going to be able to move to my next PC. It seems like a waste. £70 is roughly a new CPU or motherboard.

EDIT: Just checked - it's 2 sticks of Crucial, but manufactured a year apart. I stuck the Adata/Vdata stuff in my last PC built from leftovers after an upgrade.

It's ULi M1695, the good old Asrock Dual SATA2 board. As for support for high density memory, I can find a definite maybe possibly no-one knows. Very useful.
 
Can still get 2gb TwinMos for about £60 new, I used that stuff before with my 8npa-sli and was more than impressed with it, would be far better than no-name auction tat. Definately have a look around as there still are options.

On my Asrock Dual SATA2 PC it is running Geil Value 3200 2x1GB value sticks and has been doing for ages without a problem. However, as other have written, I really would stay away from anything less well known or cheaper.

If my budget wouldn't stretch much further than the bargain basement for memory then I would save up the cash and wait a while.
 
The lower end Crucial stuff aint exactly expensive and that would certainly be better than cheap ram. Just start off with 1 stick and add more of the same as you save up. Crucial's delivery is free anyhoo.

That would be counter-productive as I would lose dual channel. It's a pair or nothing.

I'll probably keep this machine for a while longer, so maybe £70 isn't such a waste.
