Hi guys,
I'm after a cheap satnav (<£50) for my mums partner. I know a phone would be the preferred option but I really think they would struggle with a smartphone so am looking for a dedicated satnav.

Are garmin and tomtom still the brands of choice? Any particular model that peeps would recommend? Happy to go second hand as long as the maps are 2016 or newer.

Cheers

I've gone back to using my Garmin (works very well). Far better than the TomTom devices I had before.

Navigation on my phone also worked well, but it's a phone with all of the legal baggage that using a phone in a moving vehicle entails. I decided it wasn't worth the risk.

I was gonna replace my 7 year old Garmin recently, but just downloaded the latest map instead, worked fine. But that was from a buckshee site, so not ideal. I did it because someone who was interested in buying it asked me to put the latest map on. By the time I'd done that, there was no point in selling it anymore.

The thing is, a single map update can easily cost £35+ per update, or something like £80 for lifetime updates from Garmin and the likes.

As a result, it may be prudent to spend about £100 On a new one that has lifetime updates included.

Same legal stuff applies to any electronic device that you can interact with. Also if anything blocks your view it's also classed as illegal.

For a while now I've been of the opinion that you either have sat nav as an option in your vehicle or you just use your phone. Anything else is just an inconvenience. No help I know.

as above the same rules apply to satnavs as phones with regards to using whilst driving.

Same rules apply to factory infotainment systems as well

Change to the penalty for using a hand-held mobile phone while driving

The penalty table of The Highway Code has been updated.

From 1 March 2017, the penalties for using a hand-held mobile phone while driving increase to 6 points and a £200 fine.

Your case could also go to court and you could be disqualified from driving or riding and get a maximum fine of £1,000. Drivers of buses or goods vehicles could get a maximum fine of £2,500.

It’s illegal to use a hand-held phone or similar device while driving, or riding a motorcycle.
The rules are the same if you’re stopped at traffic lights or queuing in traffic.

It’s also illegal to use a hand-held phone or similar device when supervising a learner driver or rider.

You must stay in full control of your vehicle at all times. The police can stop you if they think you’re not in control because you’re distracted. This includes if you’re using devices like your sat nav or car radio.

You do realise you can buy a phone mount to mount it to the windscreen? This then allows you to use the navigation hands-free.
