I'm guessing that cheap quality ethernet cables from the Bay either work or they don't but just want to make sure.

Have bought a 5m flat cable in the hope that a wired ps3 conn will stop PSN drops.

Will cable quality have much effect?

Ethernet cables are so cheap anyway, why get them from some random ebay shop? You need a cable tester to check your current one really.

Also, the "round" (normal) UTP cables contain twisted pairs of cable, this helps combat interference.

I would not be able to say for sure that a flat cable wont have twisted pair, but I am guessing it wont. If you are having drop issues (even if its a wireless issue) why risk a flat cable for the sake of a couple of quid (if that even)

Like Duke said, its cheap as chips (if you don't buy Belkin stuff :p) so just shop around and pay something reasonable for a regular cat5e cable.

You can run a UTP cat5e cable under the carpet all the same, its not THAT much thicker. I would have concerns about people walking over it though. They are not the strongest of cables.

Why not run it up the wall and over the roof and back down?

I work putting cable in office buildings, flat cables are a peice of ****.
You want to try and twist the "pairs" as far along as the cable as possible, that is all cat6 is really, just adds another barrier. Would not expect drop from no twisted, its just a bit strange that they sell cables that arnt.

If you have a layer of underlay underneath the carpet then cut a small slice out of it, lay the cable through the gap and you do not even notice it :D

The reason I don't have it wired atm is because it has to cross the hallway so I thought I could get the flat one for running under the carpet.

Although a bit of a pain to do, you could/should be able to fit the cable underneath the skirting board.

You see, the problem is, and I didn't think it was even possible, that my wifi keeps getting interrupted say if something particuarly noisy drives past the house. :p

I wish I was joking but those I play with online will tell you that I've had the conn drop from a kid going up and down the road on a mini-moto, tractors driving past and even just cars with a loud exhaust.

IIRC, I never had any conn issues before I moved to wifi. Before then, the PC was in the hallway but now that it's in my bedroom, any cable would be running across the hall right by the front door.

At christmas, my granda almost tripped over it when I had a 360 wired up. :p

So, I went flat to go under the carpet as I assumed it would be the better choice and I want to avoid having it run up the wall and across the ceiling if possible as i'ts not the best looking sight in the world. :)

It uses a lot more cable but in a hall instead of across the shortest route where its a trip hazard you can run all around the walls, crossing door openings either round the top of the door architrave or on the floor by the threshold strip.

often the cable will be small enought to tuck under the bottom of a skirting board or tack to the top of woodwork where it will look like moulding if you match the cable colour or paint it in.

with carpets theres usually room to stick cable between the wall and gripper rods

homeplug / powerline adapters my is prefferred method though 5minutes to get it working and its portable just not as cheap to buy as cable
