And herein lies the rub. Big power and speed doesn't always result in "fun" and "smiles". From what I've seen, as mainstream cars have got more powerful, they've also got a lot more capable, meaning that they can hit big speeds and do it fairly easily. The result being that to get real excitement from a genuinely fast car, you're typically talking about breaking the speed limit and potentially by a fair margin.
So for example, I now drive our E90 330i in "smooth" mode and find that very rewarding.
My MX5 (also used as a daily commuter) is where the real smiles are, and it's quite easy to get them at sensible speeds.
I feel like there's a fair few factors I'm not leading on i.e my job and a few other factors that play into it but I complete get your point. I've been pinballing around at various different ends of the markets but a consistent for me has been 4 doors and fair room. I'm fortunate enough to live on the coast with some lovely costal B roads so plenty of room to drive a bit less sensibly. I do get your point tho, guess I'm trying to balance on the cusp of sleeper I can also have fun in without buying a focus ST or ep3.
