Hi all,

can someone recommend some models i can get cheap off ebay.

i understand that all it needs to do is export file so i can upload to strava my stats.

Before I had my garmin I just recorded my rides using my phone, since I already had it and was carrying on rides in case of emergency/breakdown there was no added cost.

I don't really want to mount my phone on my bike. Will it pick up GPS in my pocket?

Yes it will

put it in your backpack if you can, the up and down motion of your leg while pedalling can throw it off believe it or not. i used to get more consistent results from my iphone when i removed it from my pocket.

are there no cheap second hand garmin 800's on ebay?

As already suggested, use the Strava app on your phone.
If you want a dedicated GPS unit have a look at the Garmin 200. It's available now for around £70 new, probably less on the auction sites used.

the backup phone idea is probably best and cheapest.

thank you all for your suggestions

Garmin edge 500 with cadence meter and heart strap available from amazon france, free 30 day prime trial.

Not bad for 149 euro, £105 ish, use google chrome to translate the page, remember to select pay in euros at the end.

I love my edge 500, very small, good battery.

You could probably sell the cadence meter for £25 and the strap for £15-20 maybe more.

I'm after a dedicated watch/device for my bike and for running.

In my experience, using a phone can lead to the heart break of lost Strava data! I've had the battery on my phone die a couple of times on long rides which can be really gutting. Luckily I was with someone else who was wearing a watch and I got the GPS data from them...
