cheap HD DVD player?

Are you sure you're asking for the right thing there?

There's only two or three HD DVD players out in Europe at the moment so not much scope for recommendations.

Plus Wait for the BR/HD DVD combi players to be released (and come down in price!!)... More choice of films that way!! :)

You have several real options right now:
1. Here at OCUK, who sell a Tosh E1 at a very competitive price
2. A Microsoft HD-DVD drive, which will connect to either an Xbox360 (if you have one) or a PC via USB2. The HD-DVD drive is around £130. If you're considering connecting to a PC, you'll apparently need something pretty meaty.
3. Import one from the US. The problem with this is that they're now not that much cheaper than the UK, and as they will require a power adapter, probably incur import duty, won't be capable of playing R2 SD-DVDs and will be a pain in the bum to return to the vendor in the event of an issue, doesn't look like a clever option anymore.
4. Wait, there will always be cheaper options.
5. Go with a combined BD/HD player. Unfortunately the first one is yet to arrive and is likely to cost over a grand, so it's hardly a cheap option.

write to sony and microsoft and say that you had each player (dont let them know you are talking to both of them) then say that it exploded and burned down the back half of your house, send some pictures in and get a nice bit of cash (of free dvd players) and agree to keep quiet

hey , it might just work

I would recommend a HD upscaling DVD until the war over BR and HD-DVD is over.
Due to the involvement of the giants on each side of that war - I don't think there will be a winner! I really think both formats will survive and rival each other for years! Maybe price will dictate the winner in the end! :o

after doing a fair bit of research I think you are correct!

thanks everyone else for the advice.

I've heard that HD-DVD will win because the porn industry has decided to use that format. It happened with VHS and beta max! On a commercial front it a lot cheaper to author material for HD-DVD than BlueRay 1/10th which for small studios, colleges and small businesses is significant saving.

But in the end its true neither will win, everything will be downloaded from the internet using products like xbox360, Kiss DP600 and Apple’s iTV.
:D

I think your right, it's just like the =/- Dvd recorders. Just wait and get one which plays both. i can't really see either format losing.
