Hi folks,
Where do you get your HPI checks done? HPI themselves charge about £40 or so - other places charge a few quid less. Anyone got any recommendations for where to try?

I know the car will have outstanding finance on it as part of any deal I may strike would end up in this being paid off, but I want to check it has not been stuffed into a wall or anything.

Any recommendations?

Matt

i use the 88600 service.

text: CHECK registration
to: 88600

Cost: £1.50

registration being your registration number. This will tell you how many owners and if its been stolen including giving brief details about the car. if you want an accident check:

text: CHECKD registration

Cost: £3.00

i just did the 88600 one (the £1.50 one) and it said that my car has 1 more than the RAC stats say.
Is it possible that 88600 record the dealer that registered the car first as the "first owner"?

The RAC data isn't very accurate. As for the HPI check pay the £40. HPI are the only one's to guarantee their data and will pay out if problems are found out later on (as long as you follow their T&C's). After all what's the point of doing a HPI check if you can't rely on it?

If you want to check if it's gone into a wall the only way to be sure is to get an inspection done. They'll do a paint depth check around the car to make sure it's all uniform. A HPI check will only reveal if it's been classed as an insurance write off at some point. Worth doing just for the peace of mind IMO.

The RAC data is very accurate and is linked to the DVLA database. If you believe its not accurate, then... you need to contact the DVLA.

Rotty, was your car a fleet car at all? Mine has, technically, had one owner from new but the guy had it as a lease car then bought it from the lease company so although he was the only driver from new, it showed as me being the third not second owner.

a lease car or similar , log book was in name of "BMW financial services"

I assume that would make it lease/pcp/contract hire or similar

So you could find the fact it has 1 more owner than you expected was not becuase the database is wrong but becuase the guy who leased it subsequently bought it?

I'm talking about the free one RAC provide (which i assume xcessive was talking about as well). I assume you're talking about the paid for service? The free one has loads of inacuracies in it which i believe was reported on this forum and many others.

It's the same database? The inaccuracies I'm aware of are the fact it can be a bit.. lagged so doesnt show some new cars and recent plate changes, and the fact the manufactured date is incorrect for all cars registered on a Y plate and before..

No idea. I thought it was generally inacurate. In the end Rotty's V5 must show how many previous owners the car had had, and that's the one i would go with.

The free RAC service has been wrong for 1 of my 3 cars. Log book stated 3 owners, RAC stated 6  Also listed it as a derv when it wasn't

Humm, well I will steer away from the text line then. I notice that the RAC do a "proper" check for £24.99 which seems reasonable. I'll have a read through the T&C's later on today.

Cheers,
Matt

The text one is very good. Its because one shows the TOTAL drivers and one shows just the PREVIOUS drivers.

Just to clarify, the RAC Vehicle Status Check (£24.99 jobbie) uses the same data as HPI, it just isn't as extensive (misses Mileage/Valuation data etc). What information the check does provide however, will be identical to that provided by an HPI check.

There are some rebranded products soon to be (re)launched such as WhatCar and Caravan Club which will basically be identical to an Premium HPI check in terms of the information they provide, just at a slightly cheaper price.
