"Cheap" incar recording

you can buy HD digicams for well under £200 now, infact, gadget show had one on last week that fared quite well, it was the Sanyo Xacti TH1, stick it to your dashboard and hey presto, HD recording.

I have the same webcam as InvaderGIR and ran my cables the same way, mounted the cam in the front bumper and a cheap mic in the engine bay. Laptop recording in the passenger footwell. Will get my Nurburgring lap up on YouTube for people to see later one.

I'd say its a good way to test it and get it all set-up, when you are happy you can then buy a decent cam and mount it somewhere. Also you have to think about weather proofing if its mounted externally as my cam started to play up with the tinyest amount of rain (and bug splatters!).

i use pretty much the same setup as overlag, hacked powershot s3is, and a headrest mount i made at home.

skip to 30secs to see me fail at driving ;)

Problem with proper camcorders is that they rarely have Aux Audio Input which makes them nigh on useless for recording on/in-car stuff.

batteries dont last long either, and that Xactti doesnt allow the unit to be plugged in and used at the same time. You have to charge the battery then use it. Would be much better if you could plug it in to the 12volt socket and have unlimited battery time.

I'm also very interested in this subject, but it seems like many of the suggestions might not go down to well at track days?

At brands hatch they seemed to be very picky about cameras, only allowing in car cams if they were physically bolted down. I'd have have thought it was be similar at most tracks?

Quite liking the Grille cam + Engine bay mic + Laptop, but I'd be a bit worried were to securely mount the laptop itself (out of the sight of scrutineers ;))?

Sinchase,

I got the Modrify camera mount for the s2000. its basically a metal plate that goes under the wind deflector. you then get a stand toa ttach the camera onto it.

I had a load of bonus bond vouchers, so got a canon minidv camcorder from argos with tapes for about £70. Quality I find is absolutely brilliant as shown in the video below

Does it have an aux audio in?

Wind noise in that area is awful with the top down :(

Edit - Tube wasnt working but got link anyway, if your mic is in the engine bay I guess it has :P
