I need something for my htpc for playing a few games, but £40 for a Microsoft wireless pad for pc seems extortionate. Any idea what brands are of acceptable quality that can be had cheaper and still get recognised properly by games?

Wired controllers come with a long lead for 20 quid and work fine.

Wireless ones are 25 quid but I do now realise you would need a receiver :-(

Yeah that's the one. Official pads are a good buy. Everything else pales in comparison really.

I'd just put up with a cable for the limited use.

I remember buying my wireless receiver for about 8 quid. They seem to have rocketed in price / become rarer

Wireless is probably better tbh, I have wired and it's fine and all, the wire doesn't bother me etc. but it's a pain in the arse that every time I power down my PC the bloody thing sits there flashing the middle button. :p

I did get a knockoff 360 pad for about £5 as well and I have to say, the official one was much better value for money. Knockoff versions of most pads tend to be complete crap, I had a Madkatz PS3 controller (and they are a very big fight stick brand) and it was knackered after a week, completely unusable.

It seems the official wireless pad comes with a receiver (from OcUK anyway according to reviews) so that seems to be the best idea. Cheers lads.

Make sure you get one that says its for Windows, the basic wireless 360 pad doesn't come with a receiver and is only for use with 360 consoles.

I owned a few cheap controllers in my time they are normally pants and don't feel as good as the real thing and end up breaking.

Your better off investing in the real thing and it will last many many years :)

What costs the most is the controller+battery+wireless adapter and recharging lead. There are a few places in your high st. you could pick one up from. Obviously on here I cannot name names but it rymes with name. But either way you do it you are still going to be charged around £30-£35 with all those bits. Much cheaper to buy a wired controller and its just plug 'n' play

xbox 1 controllers work on pc all you need to do is cut the wire and rewire colour to colour on a standard usb cable don't need to solder or anything just twiddle wires together

then use xbcd software am using an xbox 1 pad myself as had one lying around am sure you could buy them cheap as chips in second hand shops, the D pad is way better on

the xbox 1 pad compared to 360 too only gripe is only has 2 triggers the lb rb are on the front by the normal buttons

My mate is takes the wireless receiver part out of the front of his xbox and has it wired to a usb socket. Nerdy but works :-)

Actually ocuk is much cheaper, and apparently (confirmed by reviews anyway) their official pad comes with the reciever. Play and charge is not a real issue for me because this is just for my htpc and won't be used that often (xbmc and a bit of don't starve mostly). £30 is a bit more than I can spend right now, but it seems to be the best bang for buck in the long run.
