Cheap NVME drive

If you had less than £100 to spend on an NVME drive what would you choose?

The cheaper the better as my Kaby Lake CPU will only be £60 same goes for mobo £50. I want NVME for pure speed.

Obviously the cheapest is like £60 but there are quite a few available in the £60-£80 price range was just wondering if there is one that really stands out at that sort of pricing and worth paying the extra £5-£20 for.


Also I take it you can use a NVME drive as an OS drive and it's not just for storage?

Be careful as a lot of the M.2 drives (Kingston, Crucial, WD) in that price range are still SATA not NVMe so limited to max 600MB/s transfer rates.

Looks like the Samsung PM drives offer significantly better performance than the Intel P600's for only £10 extra so personally I'd choose one of them.

Samsung:- OEM, 2 year warranty, faster
Intel:- officially supported, 5 year warranty, slower, £10 less

ETA - not as fast as the Samsung on paper, but better GB/£ id you are budget conscious

Yeah, that would be my choice. For me the only downside is the 2 year vs 5 year warranty that the Intel comes with.

As mentioned above, yes the Intel is slightly better value per GB but it's only a £10 difference and if you're after pure speed there's a big difference in performance...

- Read Speed: 3000MB/s - vs - 770MB/s
- Write Speed: 650MB/s - vs - 450MB/s
- IOPS: 360k / 150k - vs - 35k / 91.5k IOPS

They're both fine for OS drives with current (i.e z97 and newer) boards and Win10.

Im guessing read speed is more important than write speed for an OS device

Just bought myself the M.2 sm961 for use as OS drive with WIN 10 and I'm getting 3200 read - 1500 write.

At £108 delivered from another retailer, I was happy to pay the extra for 256gb v 128gb

any other differences between the sm961 and the 960 evo m.2 besides 960 been a little bit faster

As far as can tell, a higher price ( from £113 upto £158 ) and from what I can tell, a longer/better warranty, thats it really. And 256gb V 250gb for the evo.

And the fact the 960 evo 250gb is out of stock/on back order pretty much everywhere.
