Just tried it - Dialling the 0207 number, I get a message asking me to enter a PIN. I tried the full number anyway, prefixed as normal by 001 but I got a message saying "sorry, unable".

Yeah it’s a bit tricky. Make sure you’ve got the right number for landline / mobile.

Just thinking of VoIP, could you get a provider such as Sipgate setup with a US number, you could login to it from an internet connected device and dial out from there with your US number on a PAYG basis or receive calls.

I went on holiday to the Caribbean, a few months ago and utilised a free Wi-Fi connection in a bar to phone the UK from my UK number, the cost was the same as making a local call when at home. Irrelevant but the app I used was Zoiper.

with localphone voip payg i pay 0.5p/min mob/land to usa, same price as uk landlines- with x-lite client.

Oh, this was years ago. I used my work phone in the end and hoped they wouldn’t notice an international call. They didn’t.

Cant you get your friend to go somewhere with Wifi (cafe or something) then use Whatsapp? Even my grandma (late 80s) uses Whatsapp now instead of her landline.
