Don't bother with 123-reg when it comes to eu domains. I've been a customer of theirs for years without any problems until it came to this!
For one thing, the checker for eu domains on their website doesn't actually work, its just a gimmick. i attempted to pre-register a few domains and it turns out they were actually already taken in the sunrise period. Had this checker thing told me i wouldn't have attempted it. I'll get the money back, but i still had to pay a lot on the vat. Also i've had numerous problems with them taking my bank details when it came to buying these. i use the card all the time and theres plenty of money there. seems like a right messup with this company.
Todays the launch day and they still havn't updated their site! Makes me think i'm going to loose out on what i want.
When you say "Taken" during the Sunrise period before you attempted to order the domains or were they just applied for?
If the domain had actually been activated and you were still able to apply for it then yes - they were in the wrong.
However the .eu registry not only invited, they encouraged multiple applications for each domain.
The idea being that they were in a first come/first served situation.
If the paper work didn't get submitted by the first person then the second in line would be considered etc.
We applied for a .eu domain that we were actually 4th in line for and we've actually got it - because the first 3 applications all failed as they didn't/couldn't provide the back-up paperwork.
Even now there are thousands of domains which have not been sorted out.
Go to the .eu WHOIS and you'll see that in the majority of cases where there is more than one application it still hasn't been decided who gets it.
Applying during Sunrise was extremely straight forward - you didn't have to provide any kind of paperwork at all.
I could have applied for a .eu with just my name.
However once my application had gone through and the domain switched status to "Application Pending" I'd then have 40 days to provide the backup paperwork.
Without this you are not getting the domain - simple as that.
The Sunrise period for .eu domains was quite complicated and misunderstood by many (us included before we spent nearly a week going through all the various FAQ's etc).
The SUnrise period also isn't over with the advent of Landrush.
For example anyone who applied for a domain during the Sunrise period, even though we now in Landrush, have to abide by the Sunrise rules.
Example being somebody who pre-registered a domain yesterday.
Just because we are today in Landrush, their application is still fully subject to Sunrise rules and they will have 40 days to provide the required paperwork to backup their application or else they won't get the domain and it will become available to all once more.
