Cheap Rig ~£300

Thats what i was semi intending to do, I was looking at an e7500 for myself and giving him my e5200 (well not giving) and then upping my cooling to a titan fenrir :)

I suggest you progress into the Intel Core 2 Quad or the AMD Phenom tbh. This way you keep yourself closer to the present times of computing and you dad will be happy because he will get a better PC.

Is the £300 your dad's or does it apply to your own personal budget as well?
If it was myself, I will always have "flexibility" when I'm upgrading something for myself, but not for others..lol

I wanted to have a figure of £300 for his build, then when i come to buy it im going to change the processor, CPU cooler and possible add a GTX260 :) bringing it to something like £450

Because that is AMD based, i want to get intel so i can upgrade the CPU in mine, and he gets my OC'ed e5200 :)

Seems a pretty obscure build tbh.
How about this -

+ a mATX case (dont see any in stock at OcUK) and your E5200.

Gives you some room to upgrade ur CPU.

(If his current HDD/DVD drives are IDE i wouldnt bother with them in the new system.)

Yeah, his HDD and DVD drives are IDE. But I don't know if I have another copy of the operating system, the copy of XP home he has came with his current system. That's why I wanted to use the HDD, I don't know if the installation disk will work in his new computer. Meaning I wouldn't be able to do a fresh install of XP on his new computer... Make sense?

Yeah i get what your saying, but you will need ro rebuild it anyway - problems will occur with such large hardware changes.
Most non-OEM installation disks are manufacturer specific and decide the brand of computer using mobo BIOS i believe so the change in mobo makes compatibility unlikely.

Could always use Windows 7 RC, or if XP is a must use someone elses installation and use an app like KeyUpdate to change it to his liscence.

I don't know how to get another copy of XP, I have a disk for vista, but its only 1 license... Which I'm using on my computer. What if i did a fresh install of XP in his computer, then when it comes to the configuration I move the drives?

I don't see an easy way to keep his OS :( I'm not too bothered if he looses XP Home, but it would be good if he could keep it, because he is used to it...

Fresh install just before the switch might work out, could be odd though, Ive had switched IDE's do odd things to me before.
W7 RC is nice and user friendly - wouldnt take too much getting used too.

Yeah but it would mean doing another fresh install later down the line when the RC version starts the auto shutdown....

My dad is the sort of person who likes to keep a system, not alter it at all then scrap it and get a whole new one when it gets unbearably slow.

I want to be able to build it, then not have to do anything on it for years in the future...

Lets hope the XP installation works out then.
I still think going with my original AMD type setup is the best idea and then putting leftover cash towards your upgrade.
