Cheap running shoes?

What constitutes as a good shoe test before buying, how do you know if youve picked the right shoe ?
They look at your shoes to see where they are wearing out on the sole, have a look at the shape of your foot and have a look at the way your foot lands when you run (eg pronation, supination etc). Then they will make recommendations for the trainers you'll need, which is usually the same support style from a number of different brands. So you'll have 4-5 different pairs of trainers to try on and run round the shop in and you choose the ones that are most comfortable. You'll know you've got the right shoe because it will feel right compared to the others. If you don't find it, have a look in another shop for a different brand. Example: Nikes don't suit everyone, you might need a Mizuno or Asics.

It's important to get the right support because the shoes are angled and shaped to allow for the way your foot lands on the floor and to absorb the blow. If you wear incorrect support then your foot will be pushed out of alignment when it lands and you'll end up with aches, pains and eventually an injury.

What others have said about trying multiple brands is also a very important point. I started out in Mizuno Waveriders and they had a flex point right on the ball of my foot, cue ending up with a stress fracture and being unable to run for 4 months. I can't recommend Asics enough, my Nimbus 12 shoes are the most comfortable shoes I've ever owned.

do these specialist running shops also do other sports footwear? I really could do with some basketball trainers being "matched" to my style as I have bad shins and insoles havnt sorted them :\

The one I went to only did running shoes.

Had my analysis today. I was recommended a neutral shoe. Tried on a pair of Asics Gel-Nimbus 11s, they seemed good but the store are selling them for £105. Just checked online and they're going for half that.

Good work on taking the advice and going to get fitted for some decent shoes suitable to your feet. I made the same mistake of cheap standard trainers for regular running which has ended in knee injuries and a need for physio years down the line.

I thought the same as the OP and bought cheap running shoes - used to get sore ankles and shins all the time but last year whilst I was marathon training I got checked out and bought some Mizuno Wave Rider 13 for about £80. Best purchase I ever made for my running!

The younger brother of the shoe I'm currently in (Nimbus 12s) and you can't go wrong :)
