Again I am new to all this. I see you can buy a pack for as little as £1, is there any difference compared to more expensive ones?

Not really.

Main difference is that cheap packs are generally only available in a few common grades (normally fairly coarse).

I'd say yes but it depends what your using it for.
Basic sanding of wood then no, metal or extra course glass paper then yes.

Bought cheap sandpaper once, never again

As soon as you rubbed it the surface came off and left more bits of sand than actaul material to sand away, ending causing more problems than it solved. (i burnt in a fir of rage)

As others have said, it depends on what you want to do with it, I have had cheap stuff before and it got the job done

It's all about the quality of the backing paper. Cheap stuff peels off and becomes disconnected. Screwfix is a good place for sand paper, the titan range is decent and comes in various grit(s).

There is a difference, it just depends what you want to do. Both will work but cheaper paper generally breaks up easier, can get gummed up quicker and might present some compatibility issues if you are buying for power tool use (such as fitment, size, position of dust extraction holes etc)
