I am moving out in 2 weeks and as a present my mum has offered to buy me a sofa up to the value of £500. I am having a bit of difficulty finding something to buy.

I keep reading reviews saying all the big chains are rubbish, but I don't know if they are rubbish or just rubbish in comparison to more expensive brands.

Where should I be looking?

Mine was fairly cheap from SCS! :)

It was the most comfortable one in there and one of the cheapest.. Can't remember how much it was but its a three seater and was under £500.

My Ikea sofa was less than £300 and it's alright, it's too small but I had to buy a small one. It's comfy. The leather's ripped though, but if you spend £300 on a leather sofa you can't expect all that much :D

Spend a bit more at Ikea and you get quite a nice one.

Any sofa for £500 will be cheap and rubbish. Will probably do for a couple a year or 2 though. Ikea a possibly your best bet for 'fairly decent' stuff at a low price point. Bonus points is it;s easy to get into your house as it's all flat packed. Forget leather at this price - It will be leather in no-thing but name. I'd get a refurbed/re-upholstered Stressless / ekornes recliner and stool. That will last decades and be better than anything costing 2-3 times the price. Sucks if you have friends round though, just a get a cheap couple hundred quid sofa for them to sit on.

But seriously look on Ebay. We have just bought a 6 month old Tetrad leather sofa which cost £2200 for £800. Your money goes much further buying 2nd hand and you get the quality which will last.

Nabru DIY sofas are a great way to get a decent sofa for less money. Assuming your prepared to put in a bit of effort putting it together, you should find that you can get something decent for your money.

They cost more than £500 but I can heartily recommend the Älvros 2 & 3-seater sofas from Ikea. If you HAVE to stick to a budget of £500, I was originally going to go for the Ektorp which is a lot cheaper but wasn't quite as comfortable.

Girlfriend and I just got a really nice one for about £440 delivered from IKEA.

What one did you get?

CSL are a northern chain and don't deliver to London. I have been looking at second hand stuff, only problem being it is all collection only.

My girlfriend has decided that these look 'cheap' and has vetoed the idea.

Look in the big chains and see if they have end of line sofas, ex display etc, can get some good deals if you're not fussy!
