Hey guys, I just bought another 2GB of RAM and a second exact HDD as my current one for a raid 0 setup. I have also just bought Vista Ultimate 64 so obviously going to do a clean install. Just wondering, should I look to buy a separate hard drive for the OS or will install Vista on a raid setup be ok? Been looking at some Transcend 8GB SSD for around £60?

Why not to use cheap SSD for an OS drive:

fast boot time is indicative of the drives general performance, so is boot time is fast you can bet it`ll be fast in other areas aswell.

I`d say cheap SDDs aren`t worth it over a mechanical raid setup for the OS, the performance gain will either be neglagable or none existent.

A decent quality SSD is another story though, if you can affor a good quality one such as Mtron/Intel/Memoright (my personal preference being an Mtron and not just because I have one!) that`s big enough for what you need then SSD is the way to go.

yeah its fast but most things load pretty nnear instantly anyway so your only shaving seconds off apps loading or the pc lloading. I just cannot beleive people are willing to throw that much money into getting a few seconds quicker load. Especialy the bigger SSD's they are rediculas prices!

But i serpose if your rich you gota spend it on something :p

Well I ended up installing it onto a raid setup - took me bloody ages to get vista to install on it! Turned out I had USB stick in the back of the PC stopping it from installing wasting 2 hours of my life googling RAID setup problems.

I see the OCZ 32GB SSD is on weekly special, kinda wish it was last week before I setup my PC but too late now plus I'm not messing on considering how impressed I am with RAID speeds (First time RAIDer :p )

Boot time means nothing to me tbo, it`s all about the snappiness while actually using the PC for at least 8 hours a day.

I wish I could afford more than 16GB, then my data could stop being jelous of my OS :p
