Hi

I have got a student placement for next year in London, both the company and university have pretty much told me there going to offer no help in finding anywhere. Trouble is price, prices seem about £300-£400 a week, I am going to be earning nowhere near enough to pay for any of this. So what do students/placement students generally do for London? Are there subsidised lets or anything available?
As it is near Paddington, it would be possible to commute, so would it be cheaper living anywhere within distance of Paddington and travelling in, if so what places to look at?

Sorry about this, just I have never been to London for more then a day, so know nothing about the area, prices etc...

Thanks

Swindon - it rocks.

Seriaously, though, I dunno as I don't currently live and have never lived in London. However, Google Maps showed Paddington to be relatively close to Notting Hill, Bayswater, Maida Vale, Kensington and Knightsbridge. They're hardly like living in Walford.

Forget living in West London... head East. Gotta be cheaper. I'm sure someone else will know which parts of the East End are bearable.

findaproperty is good for finding studios if you don't want to share.
Would you rather live somewhere central or somewhere nice but a good commute in on the tube?

Honestly wouldn't mind either, as the office is near Paddington Station its easy to commute if that would be cheaper.

In London, you can feasibly live anywhere and go anywhere and still be able to get back to it at any time of day or night.

It's usually easier to look at it in terms of the tube zones. The further out you go, in general the cheaper it is.

Depending on how you intend to get about, if you do plan on using the Tube, it might be worth seeing what lines run to where your place of work/study is, then using that as a basis for a good easy way to get there and so can decide what areas might be good to live.

How have you worked out how much you can spend on rent? I did a placement last year and was on 19.5k, 560 went on rent per month which was about my limit... 130 a week isn't so bad, it would obviously help if you're sharing.

house share is the only way for students, unless said student has filthy rich parents.

My girlfriend goes to uni just outside of london (south) and lives in a crappy town in a house share. 4 bedroom etc and they pay about £200 each i think.

Think your best bet is to commute and find somewhere just outside of London with some friends. close to transport links, tube or overhead. its normally about £4-£5 for a return from Dartford into Charring Cross AFAIK, i dunno if thats any use too you but thats the standard cost of transport. 45-50 min train ride!

If you do end up hosue sharring, which you most likley will, make sure you get to know the people first. have the come over and stay at your place for a week or something. the worst thing you want is to move into somewhere with somebody/people that you dont really get along with.

End of the day, London is expensive to do anything! lol

You won't be able to rent your own place on 130pw no matter how crap it is.

House-share is the only way, £520 a month all inc can get you an alright room in a house-share if you pick a cheaper area.

As reference, I pay £600 all inc for a large double in a newish flat in Tooting, and my housemates pay £500 and £460 respectively for the smaller double rooms.

i used to be in fulham for about £450 a month, and a mate of mine is on great eastern street for £400 a month - loads to do round there as well.

i found mine through gumtree, and i'm pretty sure he did to.

wish i still paid £450 a month :(
