Im looking at gradually upgrading my system a few steps at a time due to limited funds and figured its a decent time to start.

my current system is as follows

AMD 4400 X2 cpu
Asus A8N-SLI mobo
AMD X1900XTX gfx
2gb RAM
Creative X-FI (keeping it)
Antec 420 watt PSU
2x 160gb Maxtor HDDs in Raid 0 - ones abit dodgy to will replace ASAP

Im after going to a decent Core 2 Duo but dont want to spend a daft amount of cash. Im a gamer and like to run things smoothly so its gotta be something decent. Not sure on budget yet but have a go

You could keep your old case & possibly the PSU. Are the HD's SATA? What type of RAM do you have? I'm guessing you could keep that as well. So hopefully all you'll need is a new mobo, CPU & possibly gfx card unles you want something with a bit more legs in it.

do you currently have an agp or pcie graphics card and it your cpu skt939 or am2?
A8N-SLi is Socket 939 & PCI-E (SLi *hint*hint*).

OP, considered a new PSU & GFX then overclocking the 4400 (maybe also a decent HSF)?

EDIT: How about...
