I'm looking for a webcam, first time around so I have no idea what's classed as a good one, just need something for MSN, was looking at the Microsoft VX-1000 just wondering how well it works, and if it works in Linux (Ubuntu/Gentoo) easily enough?

Well for £12 you won't do any better, not a bad "budget" cam according to different comments, there are Ubuntu drivers for this cam which work apparently...

I don't know the webcam you referred to myself, but when I first bought a webcam I went for a cheap one. We mainly use it talking over skype to family overseas, and it wasn't long before I replaced it with something better because the quality was just too bad.

In my case we have the grandparents that want to see the children and therefore the better quality made a huge difference. If you will just be sitting still in front of your pc quality probably wont matter that much.

Ok thanks, its going to be used mainly for talking to a friend whose out of the city (only way we can 'see' each other), so quality isn't an massive issue although it'd be nice to get one with a good quality : money ratio, so I may get the 3000 instead.

Currently using a netbook webcam on poor Linux drivers, so anything will be an improvement :D
