Guys / Gals please help.. My son has been give by one of his friend an Asus Rampage V Extreme. Now he has managed on his own to sauce all the rest to build a PC apart from a CPU and he has asked me for help in finding one. He is looking for 1 that is a cheap as possible, please can you point me in the right direction as to what he could use.. Overclocking is not an issue as he wont be doing that.
Thanks for all and any help.

Might be able to pick up a cheap LGA2011v3 Xeon, I recall some going for £80 or so. Otherwise, a 5820k will do for around £150.

Thanks for the quick responses. 1 more question. What is the difference between an i7 and Xeon? As he’s found a Xeon for £110 would one of these be any good?

For the extra cash I would get a 5820k. Or I would want the Xeon for less money

I've just had a quick look on eBay and they can be had for £120 is you wait a while. Can get one for £150 no problems

I echo the comments as a long-term X99 user. 5820K is a great chip and prices are low if you search around. Probably due to Coffee Lake bringing 6 cores and a higher frequency.

Asus don't support Xeon processors as well as the other brands so make sure of specific support before buying a Xeon (Google for working combos). As above the i7 5820K is a good all round CPU if you can get it for less than ~£160. I've bought and sold a few over the last year or so and will probably buy another one next week.

To get an X99 system up and running I've bought several E5 2630L v3 (ES) CPUs off Ebay from the China/Japan sellers with no issue. They are usually around £80 but are slow clocked due to being ES versions. You do get the extra PCI-E lanes though.

As I mentioned Asus is not the best choice for trying the Xeon route though. Gigabyte, MSI & Asrock are much better for that and I've not had an issues using Xeon on Gigabyte & MSI.
