Cheaper dedicated hosting

racksrv.com, i believe aXer is a member on here maybe give them a try awesome company they are and reasonable price wise , obviously you'd have to setup the box yourself for web hosting purposes i think unless jon can help you or you know what to do

It's not my R200 so much as I'd love to 'pinch' it, now is really not a good time to be getting disciplinary!

I can do web configuration no bother (I've got access to web servers running lighttpd, apache, tomcat, and even IIS), but email is the one that scares me - don't want to end up with a spam relay!

I'd shy away from any form of VDS especially SAN-based VDSs as you just won't get the througput you need to do anything meaningful with databases that size, but also you need an awful lot of disk space.

Edit: As for OVH, they're French  :p

OVH are god awful, do not go with them, my company that I work for used to have hosting services with them and had all sorts of problems with people helping that didn't what know what to do at all.

We now have moved all out IT to in-house as most of our tech team know more than what they do with servers/backups/hosting etc

Go to OVH.co.uk. I have used OVH before and I can't recommend them highly enough. There servers are stupidly quick and you always get max bandwidth. The only problem I had with them was the setup fees are a little expensive. Apart from that they rock.

There is a very cheap provider based in France but if something is wrong with your server don't expect them to get back to you within 24 hours...

*ahem* :p That was in reference to OVH/Kimsufi. They are very cheap. But if this is for a business, I would definitely shy away from them. If you need absolutely maximum bang for buck and aren't too worried about what happens when things go wrong (they will eventually, given a long enough time period) then they'll do.

Like I said, there must be a catch. There is. :)

It's for pleasure, not business, but I don't want no dying thank you please. They seem rather Marmite, if the French can cope with such a thing! :)

Agreed about SAN-based VDS. I've tried to run virtual machines that way (which is essentially what a VDS is), and I/O performance was a disaster. Admittedly a proper SAN would do better than PC-to-PC, but still. I'd only do it if there wasn't that huge database.

I'm willing to pay more for service (as I do now), but just not quite as much more as I have been. Got to watch the pennies I'm afraid so it's just a matter of finding the right compromise.

At the moment I use www.wiredtree.com for a vps and there support is dam good (always get back to you with 20mins day or night!) and they know what there talking about.. But I dont know if there any good for you but there very quick... maybe worth an email? but they have discounts on webhostingtalk :)

I have used ovh in the past and they have been fine.. but yeh they ant as quick.. but you get what you pay for...

**edit - webhostingtalk has discounts where you get more disk space etc so worth taking a look.

I use Webhost.UK.Net they offered me fully managed server with free Cpanel and management service free of cost. also they perform proactive security updates on the server every month and inform me the details.. I am quit impressed with there service for a server just costing be £99 /per month

Looked at wiredtree. If they can accomplish all that then it looks like good value. Not sure I want to go back to US hosting though (nothing wrong with it - except unpredictable bills).
