Or are they all expensive? I have a crucial 240GB SATA 3 but I don't know where the space has gone, probably windows and driver updates and a few games but it went pretty fast.

You would not want your OS 0n a 1TB drive even in the Mech HDD days.

Keep the 240GB for Windows and programmes and get a 2nd drive for steam/Games.

I have Windows+Programmes on 360GB SSD (33% full) Steam/Games on 240GB SSD (75% Full) , a 1TB WD VRaptor (89% Full) for Storage and 2x4GB WD RED's Raid1 (31% Full) in Ext enclose for Backup of all 3.

I could swap the 2 SSD's round easily and I will never fill the Windows one but its best to keep some space for full performance on SSD's.

Office took a lot of space but I now use Office 365 so tiny as its mostly online.

This. I'm dual booting 7 on a 250GB SSD and 10 on a 120GB SSD, with 2 x 500GB SSDs for all my game files. Works fantastically and ideal for taking small system images. Do what's been suggested, use the smaller SSD for Windows and apps and the large one for all your game files.

Thank you guys, hey w1ze1 I don't plan on putting windows on the 1tb drive lol, it's already on the 240GB drive, I have a 1tb HHD but I want a silent and fast SSD for games, I have some games on the smaller drive but it has 40GB of space left so I don't want to use it any more for games, I saw a Crucial MX300 SSD for £210 but it's probably gone now, I will wait until the new year when I get my Bonus as I will need a new power supply too.

I would imagine that my motherboard would take a second SSD pretty easily after I take the old 1tb HHD out.

@disco P I did something to my drive a while ago which freed up something like 10 to 15gb of space, I can't remember what I did, it was a command I typed in command prmpt after searching the internet, a neat trick which worked, I think it was something to do with safe mode.

P.S. I never noticed any less performance playing games from the same SSD that windows is on, not sure if I should have noticed anything, I do notice when I play games from the HHD though I can here it tick and load at certain times during gameplay which annoys me.

Anyway thank you for the link too, what an amazing application, Far Cry 4 takes up 30GB and I have 65GB in steam games, I only have 150GB of games on the 1TB HHD but I will still probably go all out on a 1TB SSD.

Sandisk had their Ultra II 960GB for ~£165 around 2 years ago. Who knows what black friday will bring.
Damn, I didn't know black Friday was so close, what amazing timing! just as well I have some money in the bank, here's hoping!

Just curious, but why not?

I'm planning on getting a new SSD this Black Friday as an upgrade to my old 120gb SSD. I use it as an OS+games drive and keep 30% freeform performance reasons.

Is there a reason why you can't have OS+games on a 1TB SSD?

No reason you can do want you want but 1TB is large for an OS and to put all your eggs in one basket.

Also think back in the day larger HDD's were immature with more platters tighter together for the 1st time ever so higher risk of failure but tech has matured there now.

In 2001 30-60GB was large.

There's no reason, you can do it if you like. But I'd put your OS onto the 120GB drive and all apps and games on the 1TB one in your situation. Your old SSD will probably still fly pretty fast with an OS reinstall and future reinstalls/system images will be much easier. With Steam, Origin, Uplay, etc., it's pretty quick and easy to get back up and running after a fresh OS install.

Secure Erase the SSD or it will not be back to factory performance, do not waste a SSD's write life cycle by doing a Full Format and it will still not be back to factory performance.

I saw these as low as £149 at that time, was going to buy two but missed out. It's quite maddening the cost of 1TB SSD drives now, I still haven't bought one, waiting on the price to drop to realistic levels.

I don't see a problem with the OS, Office and games on the one 1TB drive. Everything is loaded quicker, the main reason why you get an SDD. It's also easier to backup and mirror to another drive.

I am having a look around now since the black Friday sales are on for a Crucial 1tb mx300. I am going to buy one tomorrow, I have an Asus all series Motherboard and the only other hard drive on it will be another SSD, so I will assume I can easily install a second one with no issues?

My plan is to just going to copy some of the games I want to keep onto what space I have left of my SSD from the HHD and then copy them to the new SSD.

Update, bought one lol. £205

Absolutely no reason at all not to have OS+game on the same 1TB SSD.

If you're at all serious about keeping your data safe (from loss), you don't rely on just the drives in your PC anyhow. You have a proper backup plan, keep multiple copies, etc.

Most of us don't bother because our data isn't all that important. Or the important data is a small % and can be backed up to a couple of USB pen drives.

As such a single 1TB SSD with Windows and everything else on it is absolutely fine. At work we have ~6000 users and all of them just have the single drive in their machines. When it fails it's not a problem because everything exists on servers with lots of redundancy and proper backups. That's the point. Don't rely on the drives inside your PC or laptop if your data is important. They could still all be fried by a power surge or stolen or water damage or whatever.

I just picked up another Crucial mx300 1TB m.2 sata3 drive direct from Crucial on Black Friday for £217. Everywhere else was £265-270.

You got it just in time, it was cheaper to buy mine through Amazon than it was direct from their website, strange, anyway, they have gone right up in price again, definitely a couple of good decisions! :-)

The thing you probably did was disable hibernation.

That was definitely it.

This is what I'm finding,I was going for larger and larger ssd's to allow more storage for access to everything but now I'm more inclined to do the OS install on a smaller drive so you can have more system images to hand.

I saw that the 2TB MX300 was available for £419 which seems pretty good value. Are these decent drives? I'd be swapping my WD Black 7200rpm for the MX.
