I am looking for a cheap solution for a workstation machine to power my 4k monitor.

I just bought a GTX 1030 but I am sending it back as Nvidia compatibility with Linux is poor.

I installed the proprietary drivers in Ubuntu 20.10 but it was a terrible experience.

Putting back my old Radeon 6405 the contrast is remarkable.

But as the 6405 has a highest res of 1920x1200 I'm not sure if it is the AMD card that fixed the issue or that Ubuntu doesn't operate well at 4k.

Besides I was thinking of purchasing an RX 550 instead. Good choice?

AMD is far above Nvidia when it comes to Linux compatibility.

if your not gaming... the R9 370x can output 4k

Maximum DP resolution: 4096 x 2160
Maximum DVI resolution: 2560 x 1600
Maximum HDMI resolution: 4096 x 3112

the 280/x 290/x and the 300 parts too.

When you say cheap what is your max?

Early next year you could see what the lowest spec RDNA2 card is (6500?) as it might be better than a 5500XT.

Nah I need something now.

It looks like the RX 550 is the cheapest AMD card on the market to do 4k resolution. Non gaming tasks. I just need it for a workstation.
