Cheapest car insurance tricks / tips

The £1000 excess wouldn't include the compulsory age related excess, so it is likely to be a combined total of closer to £1300!

My voluntary excess is £100, but I have £350 compulsory excess due to age, so £450 total.

That said, a £1000 increase to the excess, for a reduction of £690 on the insurance cost, is seriously worth considering at that age, but you are essentially gambling £300 if you do have a fault crash in that insurance year.

TBH that would be an option a lot of people might take at that age. I get them charging young drivers through the nose, the few I knew at 17-18 were utter lunatics lol.

Hell, even a "Your bill is £1500 for the year but if you get through then we'll give you 40% back" would work.

Of course, they don't have to do anything as people pay it anyway.

£1000 excess!

I trust myself behind the wheel :p, it was £1300 excess in total. But even when I checked the insurance with 2-3 years NCB, I still wouldn't be able to get a car that I want. After 24 or 25 the insurance goes down massively, atm insurance for my bike is £501 :D

axa knocked 10% off my insurance for having a dashcam, maybe some others might do that too

I think the general concern there is that if you say you have one then they will want video in a crash, even if you are to blame.

If they don't know you have it until you give them video, then they can't go asking for it.

Another weird thing I've noticed is I get cheaper quotes from Compare the market than I do from money supermarket.

Compare the Market has probably negotiated a better discount for their commission.

Its like my quote through the AXA website after clicking through from Topcashback, who were offering £35 cashback, was exactly £35 more expensive than the quote i got from Confused.com...

I guess they all negotiate a discount/commission rate which can vary.

Not really you could just as easily say it wasn't on at the time.

You could. I've no idea what the insurance company might say/do after that though. Your policy says you have one and we all know they can be picky gits.

Not always, my current policy came direct from Aviva's online quotation system. It was cheaper than anything from the comparison sites! I did find it a little strange, but hey ho.

Can't comment on that, as Aviva was quoting me £8000 for my car insurance... that was with my discount from work!

i was surprised when i tried adding my partner onto my insurance as its near renewal time, it put my tesco quote from 620 up to 1300, went onto compare the market and turns out with her on i get it cheaper as i went through sheilas wheels :) cost £340

If anything a dashcam should increase premiums due to increased likelihood of somebody smashing a window to get at it.

Are you a computer analyst? If not... You should try becoming a computer analyst...

I am an IT Technician and Service Desk Analyst, so I could get away with that...

e; just checked, made no difference vs my current one of 'Office Worker' which is another good one...

Insurance means your mileage may vary. It's a random number generator all the time.

The computer anylist thing came from Nath trying to insure Supra TTs at the age of 21 and trying every combination possible to get the price down.

Mrs rjk is a newspaper photographer, yet if she puts journalist on her insurance then her premium is around20% less than if she quotes on a photographer as her profession. As long as it still applies in general then I don't see a problem testing alternatives that are close. If the insurance companies drop the price for a mild change in career name then whatever.

The only way I could get insurance sub £1k on my car was to buy a house. Like owning a home makes me a much more proficient driver...

Well for most driving like a loon resulting in a conviction/ban/injury could jepordise your job, and in turn your ability to make mortgage payments, then potentially result in you losing your house, would instil and bit of sense and responsibility in most.

When I passed my test my initial quote was £3000 as Unemployed and £2500 as Student.

I started volunteering two evenings a week and put my occupation as Voluntary Worker, and I got quoted £1700.

So I essentially volunteered two evenings a week for several months until I had finished college and got a job, to save myself hundreds... :p

I did enjoy volunteering too so its not all bad!

I was doing insurance quotes last night on the back of MSE's advice that premiums are about to go up and that getting a quote now could help. My insurance is due at the end of May and some companies like Aviva are doing quotes valid for 60 days.

I'm currently with Direct Line and they gave me by far and away the cheapest quote. The quote was approximately £60 cheaper than Aviva who were cheaper by about £40 than any company on Confused.

I did modify my job title a little from Planning Officer to Local Government Officer which helped.
