What are the disadvantages of this board v gigabyte OC?

I only have 1.6k mhz ram and dont plan on purchasing higher freq (any advantages really?)
 
not really 1600mhz is plenty fast for ram

the main differences are better power phases/sound chip and added oc features on the oc board

but the cheaper board will overclock just aswell and offer the same performance regarding gaming

the most limiting thing regarding overclocking on z87 isn't the board but the cpu temps,if you get a good clocking chip are can cool it well enough then you'll be able to overclock no matter what board you choose
 
OK well I'll purchase a good cooler in the future.. but what speeds could I get from my Hyper 212 Evo and then what speed could I get from a cpu cooler of your choice.

Do I need a seperate bracket or anything for the hyper 212 evo or is it a universal cooler?

what do the better power phase do? I am getting the asus xonar dg 5.1 so no need for internal sound at all really

does the case matter in cooling? i have the cheap aerocool strike x one (might upgrade to silent case, e.g 330R) and have 4 good fans.
 
maybe 4.2ghz-4.5ghz I would expect remember haswell is 300mhz faster than ivy and 600mhz faster than sandy so 4.2ghz on haswell = 4.5ghz on ivy and 4.8ghz on sandy

power phases just provide better stable power to help on high overclocks,it won't affect you with that board

case matters but see how it goes with current case,and that cooler will still fit if you have the 1155/6 1150 intel mounting brackets it comes with

alright so say if i get 4.2ghz with this is that a good speed? are there any benchmarks or anything I can look at?

I don't really care about high overclocks, in my mind the higher it is the more unstable so dont want anything too hard for my beginner mind anyway..

will ocing the cpu affect everything or just very cpu demanding process? if it does affect everything anything i can notice in real life?
 
faster is better

you can see the comparisons in overclocks with haswell compared to ivy/sandy

4.2ghz is a decent speed,im only guessing you might manage a 4.5ghz just depends on the chip/cooler

don't know any comparisons off hand but I know roughly haswell is 300mhz better than ivy
 
You should post the full spec of what you're ordering in general hardware before you order in case anyone has suggestions.
 
8/8x crossfire on PCI-E 3.0 is perfectly fine for 79XX's, hell 4x PCI-E 3.0 is fine.

H87 overclocking will end up getting blocked no doubt too.
 
the h87 is worth considering if 16x/4x pcie speed is ok,its the cheapest way into haswell and xfire

other than that the gigabyte z87 d3h is is a decent choice
 
nah rather keep the d3h so i dont regret in the future... oh can i crossfireX with this and get a 2nd 7970? so 7950+7970?

also does anyone recommend ripping apart an external 3tb drive and making it external? its teh seagate expansion plus 3tb, think internally its just a seagate barrucuda hooked up to a PCB with a case
 
Overclocing on h87 is done unofficially.
It's an 'exploit' a manufacturer found on the chipset, Intel is set to prevent this.
Officially overclockng is only z87.

It will be difficult for Intel to put the genie back in the bottle.

Thinking about it what has the chipset got to do with setting RAM ratios and CPU clock speeds ?
After all it's the CPU which has the memory controller, PCIe controller and the clock generators on board.

Overclocking on H87 is artificial and relies on the Firmware and BIOS to disable the settings being sent to the CPU to set itself up with ratios higher than stock.

The CPU ratios are now unlocked on H87 and I guess it is only a matter of time before the RAM multi's as well.

ATM You can set the RAM clock higher than 1600 but the H87 chipset then disables the post.
The CPU certainly gets the right commands to set the RAM multi but the H87 then goes into traffic warden mode and wheel clamps the CPU.

Personally it aggravates me when companies put artificial restrictions on hardware.
