The ability to have shell access to my space

The ability to install things (such as perl magick)

Fast and reliable with decent support

Thanks ;)

If you go for a VPS check out cheapvps.co.uk, London based and I think they still have their Christmas offer on - whatever plan you go for they will double the resources.

Have used both their Windows and Linux plans and no problems with that - only downside is their support can be slow and they all appear to say 'We will get our senior tech to take a look', which then takes a few hours.

Saying that I have only used their support a few times.

that's just a wordpress blog. not really the sign of a professional company is it?

I can assure you that CheapVPS are very good. I ran with them for a short period of time before moving to a dedicated for a project I have since sold on :)

Agreed with Rob. Wordpress is great tool - and it's free - to be used for many purposes other than just 'Blogs'.

You don't need to do much mucking-about to totally customise its look, either, and it has lots of features that are useful for many purposes.

I don't agree with a WordPress blog being the main website for a business, especially a web business. A business should at least make the effort to have a corporate image and not some free blog software.

Not really. I think it looks unprofessional. No company I've delt with is using a wordpress site as their main website.

To me it just smaks of lack of effort. All IMO of course.

But WordPress sites are capable of looking like absolutely any other website, and nothing about them looks inherently unprofessional. What on earth are you talking about? "Lack of effort"?

Why go to the effort of building your own site from scratch when there's free stuff out there that can do exactly what you want straight off and look exactly how you want it to look? You'd just be wasting money.

JonRohan, Wordpress is ultimately just text output. Styling, laying out and using that output with xHTML, CSS and Graphics is what makes a site unique.

As it comes, it looks like a blog yes. But strip everything bare and you have a blank canvas, except the back-end is all complete and secure for you. :)

A company who really puts the effort in, will see the cost saving aspect of using Wordpress. Not avoiding it. At least in the initial stages of a new business where costs can cripple it, and especially in such a competitive market.

CheapVPS is the sister company of A2B2 or something like that. If you looked at the web site for that you probably wouldn't like that either. It was a Vb forum, that was it!

Its a bit different and the stuff they supply works - even if it is WP blog or vB!

BTW incase people start t ochime in - I have nothing to do with a2b2/cheapvps other than having a few VPS / Dedicated servers from them and being a happy punter!
