Cheapest Graphics Card for 4k Movies

I’ve basically got some pc parts from my previous build I’m going to use as a media centre for downstairs.

All I’m missing is a PCU and graphics card. The PC will NOT be used for gaming what so ever. Just movies and series.

Just looking for suggestions of graphics cards, cheaper the better but still able to display decent quality. (Preferably able to display 4K movies)

I asked for your sources - are you talking Plex, web based video sites or what?

That CPU doesn’t have integrated graphics so that’s out. At the moment you’re looking for a cheap, basic video card. Practically anything will do

Oh my apologies. It will be things like Streaming sites (I.e. Netflix, Amazon), Blu-Ray Movies and a streaming app to watch series/anime that aren’t accessible in my country etc.

Any basic graphics will do the job no problem then.

It may not make any difference to you but make sure your Amazon and Netflix sources will output 4K. You may well find the TVs inbuilt apps are better that those of the PC. I’d also double check that you can easily play Blu-raya on the PC. There is/ was some DRM issues with Blu-rays back in the day.

I don’t want to put you off! I’m only speaking from experience that a media centre PC can be a wee bit of a headache

While most GPUs from the last decade will have the requisite processing power to display 4K video, they might not be able to output the required signal over HDMI.

For example if you only want 4k at 30fps (or 24fps for movies) with no HDR then HDMI v1.3 will be enough, that came out in 2006 and I would assume that most GPUs would have supported it within a year or two.

However if you want 4K with HDR then you will need HDMI v2.0a at minimum which released in 2015, and again it might have been a year or so afterwards before a majority of GPUs supported it.

Most PC monitors use displayport which has been consistently ahead of HDMI in terms of bandwidth so most PC users don't have to worry about such things, but majority of TVs lack displayport input. I myself had this issue in 2020, I wanted to update my PC to match my much-delayed TV upgrade to a 4k120 LG OLED, while a 2080Ti would have satisfied my requirements in terms of compute power, I had to get a 30 series to get HDMI v2.1 so I could even send a 4k120 4:4:4 signal over HDMI.

Yes you can get displayport to HDMI adapters but in my experience they are quite the crapshoot and you have to spend good money to make sure you get a quality one, and they introduce significant latency which was a deal-breaker for me but probably not an issue if its for video watching only and no gaming.

Just some things to bear in mind.

That CPU does have integrated graphics, so probably best to give that a go before spending money on a GPU that's likely to be worth more than the rest of the PC. Only issue you'll have is that it is unlikely to support full 4k.

Can confirm the 3770K has HD4000 graphics with 332.8 GFLOPS which (purely in terms of single precision GFLOPS) is roughly equivalent to a Nvidia GT 440/530/630/710.

Just use the usb port on the TV?
