My mate is after the cheapest PCIe HDMI output graphics card that can also output audio over the HDMI

He wants to play films on his pc upstairs and watch them downstairs using about 7 meter HDMI cable, will this work?

Thanks

That'll work. The cheapest card that'll do what he wants is probably the ATI 4350 or a 3450; some NV cards use an optical/spdif passthrough and 2/3 series ATI cards were limited to 5.1, the 4 series do 7.1 PCM if thats relevant to him.

One thing is though it might be worth him spending a little more on the ASUS 4350 if that has a built in HDMI socket, as it should negate the need to worry if it comes with the official DVI-HDMI adaptor (as these are custom pin-out, they're the only ones that do HDMI audio with ATI cards).

second all of the above, built in HDMI is the only guarantee of getting the special ati dvi to hdm cinverter (though getting one for a 4000 series seems to be quite easy unlike the 2000 series) Gigabyte do a nice 4350 and 4550 as well

Sapphire have way to many SKU's to work out what you will actually get in the box
