Looking through all the names I can remember now, but looking for one of those big bags, a cubic metre? of 20mm gravel for a driveway, nothing fancy just the basic stuff.

A mate said a place near here BuildBase did it for 48 inc VAT and DEL, but on their website it's coming up as £75!

Grab your yellow pages and look for local builders merchants and do some calling around, that's probably your best bet for a decent price.

Check wickes as well as ringing around.

Ton bags are the most expensive way of buying, how much do you need? Cheap by the load or half load tipped

You need to phone buildbase rather than use their website. They will discount heavily over web prices. £48/ton bag seems about right for standard grade 20mm shingle.

Awesome response!

Will get some pictures when the work is done, been smartening up the driveway here with some sleepers, so need the gravel to fill in the gaps!

Just looked back through some invoices, i last paid £36+VAT ea from buildbase for ton bags of 20mm standard shingle, at a quantity of 15 bags for my driveway here. This was in late 2011 so just over a year and half ago.

Ive bought a fair amount of gravel for various driveways and i can never get the "local" type places who do gravel tips rather than bags to match buildbase :(

How many bags you looking at.

Better to buy it loose, better deal, Jumbo bags usually have minimum weight of around of 850kg, seldom are they 1000kg.
And buy while dry weather, your then not paying for water.
Have a look on Yell, for ' Sand & Gravel suppliers', if you have a nearby quarry, you can save quite bit buying direct, most offer a minimum load of a ton (1000kg)

I needed about 1.2T of gravel for a garden path a few years ago. It was far cheaper buying sacks from Do It All than it was from the local builder's merchants.

If you waltz into a builders merchants unarmed they'll sell you everything at RRP, most trade accounts will have 40-60% off these depending on how much they purchase however if you as a one off go in armed with competitive prices from others they will 9/10 beat them.

For example I bought my Howdens kitchen for 88% off RRP, one chippy firm could only get 70% and another got me the 88%

Well it's coming Friday, I won't weigh it, but it's sure to be a lot!
The mate I asked is in the know, so just wanted to get the price he said it would be as he knows where the deals are at, in this case on the phone not web.

Looks good. Did you manage it with just the one load of gravel?

I bought one of those breakers to smash up a wall foundation in order to put a fence in. Awesome, awesome tool. My wife made me sell ours which I regret massively, especially now I have use for it again.

Oh no, in the pic where the bag has just been delivered? That was the drive before, and it already had the gravel along the front of the house, the single bag delivered was just enough to patch up the new part at the back with the sleeprs and lay a thinish layer over the rest of it to freshen it up.

The bag (850KG) disappeared in about 30minutes of shovelling!

We have a quarry a few miles away from us and a chap with a 4 ton tipper who lives around the corner. We got 8 ton of 10mm gravel delivered for £68. :D

Aye it is handy when you know folk, I'm on digging out the garden to make a drive way and I have around a 100 tonne to move. My dad has a 30 year old JCB, tractor and trailer and a few 100 yards up the road the farmer is taking the lot as he has a few holes that need filled in:) Its a few days work but it is far better than paying the £5000+vat as was quoted to do it for me.

Interested to know if a membrane and how it looks now.

Bought 2 tonne bags of 70mm around COVID time, with them being £59 each.
Need two more tonnes and am expecting a big increase :(
