Cheapest upgrades for my ageing system (BF2042, WZ2)

Is there much in it between the two cpus? I've only ever had intel/nv systems, and few problems that I can recall but a Ryzen system seems good value for money. I find the range, numbering etc of the new Intel stuff and the mb bewildering plus the Intel mb seem so much more expensive.

I was looking at an ASUS board and noticed the Strix was a good bit dearer than the one for Ryzen. I don't intend to do any overclocking unless it is one of the presets in the bios so I don't need a top end board. Even within the ASUS prime range I don't understand yet the differences between boards labelled M, K etc. I just want something that is stable and basically set and forget. Hope that all makes sense.

Here's one I had been looking at:

Yeah that'd be fine, or these (the one you sent is current OOS):

The B660 would be fine, I wouldn't opt for a B660M or anything unless you want to have a small case, M is just a smaller board (Micro-ATX).

@spiki @rare This would also go well with a B660, just noticed this :D - https://forums.overclockers.co.uk/threads/boxed-12600kf.18965595/

Not sure spiki can see members markets threads.

5600+B550 vs 12400f+B660 is pretty close performance wise with the Intel chip coming out a little faster but you will be gpu limited in most instances. It all comes down to total system cost with the mobo and cpu plus whether you go DDR5 with Alderlake, it can get complicated.

Yes, I can see the MM threads although I tend to err on the side of caution and buy new in case there are any problems.

Haz, what did you mean about gpu limited with the Intel build?

If I was buying on a budget with Warzone 2 in mind I would go this route, I think this is all in stock, only chose from in stock parts.

My basket at OcUK:

Total: £1,064.51 (includes delivery: £11.70)

You could swap out the 5600x for a 5600 but then you would need to get an aftermarket cooler such as -

Unless you have a 4090 and play at 1080p you are almost always gpu limited. Being gpu limited is not a bad thing and it does not mean you are wasting money , have to buy better parts or it will not work. Everything will work just fine and will mean you would get more fps with a faster gpu and that is perfectly normal.

Other than RAM a cpu is the least likely component to be faulty and with the intel chips they do not have pins that can be bent so that 12600k is most likely ok and a very good deal.

I have a 5600X myself, with the stock cooler I get around 85 celcius with BF2042, idle just above 50.
My CPU runs at 80% when playing 2042, the game is pretty CPU demanding too.

I would always opt for a aftermarket cooler now.

Been doing some more research this evening and as an alternative to a Ryzen build I am now considering an 13400F (be interested to see the price once OCUK get them in stock and how they compare to the 12400F) and the following:

I am no further forward to placing an order and if anything things have become more confusing with the new Ryzen and Intel chips and the increased choice. My budget has extended to about £600. In light of this can anyone advise what is the current best combo of CPU/MB/RAM/cooler? I intend to try to sell off my old kit to go towards a new gpu. The next addition I hope will be a new monitor. Regarding that am I being too ambitious with a budget build to run QHD 27" or is it more advisable to stick with 24" and all the eye candy? Thanks again.

For those parts only? I would use the motherboard you were considering and go with:

* Intel Core i5-12600K 3.70GHz (Alder Lake) Socket LGA1700 Processor - OEM - £259.99 (* SWAP for i5-13500)
Asus Prime B760M-A D4 (LGA 1700) DDR4 Micro-ATX Motherboard - £153.99
Team Group Vulcan Z T-Force 32GB (2x16GB) DDR4 PC4-25600C16 3200MHz Dual Channel Kit - Grey - £79.99

Grand Total: £504.47 (includes delivery charge)

I don't know what case you are going with, so hard to suggest a cooler.

If you have a CPU bottleneck, you could try overclocking the memory. If I recall, even the older DDR4 kits usually clocked pretty well (3000+), if given proper voltage.

Anything around a 3060 Ti would be a big jump from a 1060. RX 6600 is between a 1080 and 1080 Ti, so it is decent, but personally I'd be aiming for a 6700 non-XT (330) or FE 3060 Ti (370).

Z170 boards can be modded to fit 8th/9th gen CPUs (Asus is one of the more common).

He has a core count bottleneck, 4 cores ain't enough for BF2042. At this stage no ram and no cpu that will fit in his motherboard will fix the performance issues, he will need a new platform such as the 400/500 pound mobo+cpu+ram kits others have suggested and then he can think about a new graphics cards
