Cheapest way to up the power?

I've got a 1.6 205 GTI and I'm thinking bike carbs might be the way to go for a little bit more power? It needs some engine work doing anyway because it's burning oil so I'm tempted to do this.

Obviously a nice MI16 conversion would be good but it's a little expensive. How much would swapping over to carbs cost?

Cheaper than bike carbs would be to actually fit one of the 1.9 GTi engines... they're a straight swap and a 1.9 lump fitted with the 1.6 g'box is awesome fun :D

qouted for truth!

make sure you dont use the head from the old 1.6 if the 1.9 one wears/goes even if the roman numerals match as the 1.9 has better cams, even though from outside they seem identical

^may seem like a random peice of information but i know near first hand its not nice :p

How easy is it to fit a VTS engine? Surely it must be pretty simple as both the 205 and Saxo used the TU series engine?

I thought that was the 106, I know nothing about Pugs though so I'm almost certainly wrong:o

Hi there

I had a 1.6GTi that had the 1.9 engine put in it. Needless to say yes the gear ratios are a bit short for the 1.9 engine.

It was fun at first but eventually it annoyed me and I ended up fitting a 1.9 gearbox to go with the engine. :)

Mods wise, not much for these cars really, forget superchips as such because most of these cars now have done too much mileage for such stuff.

Best way is intake and exhaust which might give you 5BHP. Other alternative, strip it out. :D

Heads are identical. Same part numbers too IIRC (the "old" pre '85 head is different but still compatible)

The AXGT and later 205 XS shared the same 1.4 TU engine. People have been fitting VTR bottom ends into AX GTs with the AX GT heads for ages. As well as this some nutters fit the VTS engines

The GTi and diesel models use the XU engine - its completely the other way around :) Inlet manifold is at the front on the XU engines.

jonarob - easiest way would be carbs, however as the 1.6 is such a revvy unit I'd be tempted to get some cams first.

sell it and buy a faster car?

anything that is cheap wont add much power,

anything decent will more than likely up your insurance as well as costing a lot to fit.

I think I'd be tempted to get just the one cam, you might find more than one is a bit of a squeeze in an 8v XU head ;)

If I stripped my car out would I need to inform the insurance company except for obviously reducing the number of seats info?

Probably should've said. It has:

Magnex Exhaust and manifold
A 500BHP K&N Filter
and a high-lift cam.

I don't fancy swapping the engine over, I just thought fitting bike carbs would be a fairly straight forward task.

edit: I would like to just "buy a faster car", but mine is a mint example, it has done 65,000 miles (hence not so keen on an engine swap) and I'm in love with it.

Best bet is some flat slide carbs, properly balanced and jetted for the exhuast and filter. I know you can get brand new for a bike at about £400, should be able to pick up some 2nd hand for about £300 maybe?

I'm not sure how much it will cost to have the jetting set right, dyno time for a bike is far cheaper than for a car! :D

The combo to go for is either the 1.6 box and the 1.9 final drive or vice versa.

Can't ask my dad which it is - he is on hols.

As for the OP, get a set of bike carbs on it.

Give Bogg brothers a ring; they will do you a set of carbs jetted to suit and a manifold too.

MI 16 :) For the win

although have to say out of the 1.6 and the 1.9 the 1600 is the nicer engine,

get a set of webbers on there try peter Lloyd rallying for a nice freeflowing exhaust(although they dont do shiny)

then saave the pennies for some headwork a well worked head is worth 20 horses :)

heres some interesting reading

as for anything else get it stripped to the bare bones, I still miss my rough and ready 1900
